Gallant Super Falcons Lose To France Via Penalty Goal, May Still Advance

Nigeria’s Super Falcons face early elimination from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 1-0 defeat against hosts France at the Roazhon Park, Rennes on Monday, reports Completesports.com.

Wendie Renard scored the winning goal from the spot 10 minutes from time.

The African champions finished third in the group with three points from three games.

The West Africans will now hope to pick a slot among the four best third-placed teams in the competition after the completion of other groups’ games.

Onome Ebi and Rita Chikwelu get the better of France player

Should they secure a berth in the knockout stages, the Super Falcons will face either Germany or Italy in the Round of 16.

The two sides struggled to create any clear cut chances in the first half as both goalkeepers remain untested.

The hosts, determined to maintain their winning run in the competition, piled pressure on the Super Falcons defence early in the second half but were let down by their profligacy in front of goal.

The Les Bleues were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute after Ngozi Ebere to have fouled Lee Sommer inside the box.

Ngozi Ebere gets the marching order

Ebere was sent off for the poor tackle which was awarded after the centre referee consulted VAR.

Renard initially missed the first spot kick but the referee ordered a replay as Chiamaka Nnadozie was adjudged to have moved her feet o out of the line.

The centre-back made no mistake the second time as she planted the ball into the net.

Asisat Oshoala limped out seven minutes before the end and was replaced by Anam Imo.

The Super Falcons with their numerical disadvantage were unable to mount a comeback succumbing their second defeat of the competition.

  • If only the loss against Norway was by a lone goal…. Oh well, that is now history.

Well done Super Falcons. VAR enforcement of new and existing rules is catching a lot of players out.

The coaches should drum it into players that Big-brother VAR will sniff out anything, anywhere. I don’t blame the defender and the goalkeeper… These things happen.

Well done ladies. Gallant in defeat.

    • U are an idiot foolish animal like u.so this is ur best way to congratulate this girls abi.enemy of progress

      • Ubah, what we have in common for outweighs whatever differences we might have.

First, we are fellow Nigerians, secondly we are both passionate about football. That speaks volumes.

If there is something I could have said better (or in another way) point it out to me in a brotherly manner rather than rain abuses on me. We should develop each other.

You are better than that – I want to believe.

        • Well forgive me bro but that word gallant in defeat is not a gud one to our sisters

          • No worries bro. The manner of that defeat yesterday was harsh on our ladies.

They did their best under the circumstances.

There can’t be improvement not only in football but nation and personal aspect without adequate solution mix, emotional reactions or impulsive doesn’t solve any problem but compounds it. Am so proud of dis ladies..dey did very well..playing against host nation plus d home fans will always be difficult but d falcons stood their ground only to be let down by VAR decision..All d same i hope dey scale tru to d next round.. Bravo Super falcons.!!!

    • What do you expect when the person leading the VAR team is from France, I saw this on FIFA tweet of the officials before the match, the penalty was soft and retaken the penalty was harsh. Its is unethical for FIFA to appoint a citizen of a nation as part of the officials, that was the reason the match went that way I belive.

  • Two 3rd placed teams already through. Two more to go from the rest 4 groups.

China with 4 points in Group B are through.
So also Australia with 3 points and 0 GD.
Nigeria with 3 points and -2 GD will likely make it too.

Meanwhile in Group C, Argentina has 1 point with -1 and they clash with a good Scottish side with 0 points and -3. Nigeria prays for a draw.

In Group E, both Cameroun and New Zealand have 0 points with -3 GD. They’ll clash and a draw will be good news to Nigeria also.

In Group F, Chile is on 0 points with -5, but they’re up against the whipping girls of the tournament, Thailand who’re on 0 points and -17 GD. As long as Chile don’t hit more than 2 goals past them, then good news for Nigeria.

Well, it seems the omens are good so far.

  • Well fought gallant super flacons. VAR dey do ojoro ooo. Hope we qualify for the next round.

Kudos to mama Africa. I’m proud of you Super Falcons. What men can not do, women can do it better.

The days of Coach Rohr and his team including his disciples are numbered if they failed in Egypt.

I am still expecting more excuses to comes in lol. This young lady, Chiamaka Nnadozie stood in front of home crowd of France and she didn’t letting us down.

Can Akpeyi man the post in Egypt in front of the home crowd of the host nation?

We can see the different between oga Rohr and coach Dennerby ba?

I still don’t want to talk wela now. Phobia don catch cabals already before Saturday lol. Chai, I know you all one by one. You people have bn betraying Nigeria so long but this time around, we are taking Nigeria back from you people.

Again, let the excuses continues… bla…bla..bla as usual, Kilodeeeeeeee. God bless Nigeria!!!

    • Pleaase let the coach Rohr rest. His team has not even played any match and you are already crucifying him. What if he performs beyond you expectations, what will you do. You’re shouting crucify Rohr but you are praising Dennerby to high heavens for achieving almost the same result that Rohr got in the world cup.
      Which one you dey sef?

See your life people are congratulating super falcon for being gallant in defeat you deviated from the whole stuff and brought super eagles and your enemy Rohr here. I will make sure I laugh at you loudly starting from the match against Burundi. Prophet of doom you will be disappointed starting from Saturday. We will win and win well and your Bp will increase.

I think we are home and dry with this result. The girls played their hearts out. Very disciplined tactically and defensively. We played to our level and we took a step forward on the global stage. Unfortunately we lost only to VAR. We will likely meet Germany or Italy in the second round. This fabulous ladies at least deserve one more game in this tournament. They’ve demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit. Up SuperFalcons!!! We will surely make it out of the group this time. Going forward we must be more purposeful in the midfield and final third. That is the missing link in an overall fantastic performance by our darling SuperFalcons.

    • Chima E Samuels 5 years ago

Im with you here because the girls gave too many energy and psyche plus the demoralising officiating only a miracle will see us have the needed confidence to overcome either of Germany or Italy should we make it as a 3rd best.

    • Tom Ojo 5 years ago

You are right brother but there seems to be a tactical misplacement in the game. France is the host and defending Champ, they wants to maintain their position and know fully well that Nigeria surviving that group might be their future nemesis in d competition. Going for all out defensive against them is a gamble. If u observed even when we lost procession at the midfield our players won’t mark or push on they fell back to defence, giving the French leverage to follow them home thereby putting pressure intensely on our defence. In such cases continually the possibilities of cheap penalties been given is 75/25%. Defensive patters that goes with loaded midfielder and created room for one or 2 attackers mounting pressures on the opponents are potent like 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 and others. Azezat was already injured playing from the left initially deep to the midfield, so she was minus one for the whole second half. Francisca was frustrated trying to ply to instruction deep def and MF, Oparanize doesn’t wants to full, if we had have francisca enjoying her runs from the right and oparsnoze remain atop, the French won’t leave their midfield into our area deep disturbing us and looking for goals all the time. Also, we didn’t have inroad into their goal area at all. Just one hwadind was potent goal attempt we made in the first half, no direct shot at goal. Creative play was lacking. X raying the team we know that during the nations cup, from second round to the final game we didn’t score 3 goals as direct win, we got to the finals on spot kicks meaning that we don’t score. So how d we think we can do that at the wc? Aside Azezat’s goal no good one score so far. So the coaches should have worked on that seriously before hands. All the same, against France a fairly good game.

  • Falcons goalkeeper is better than all super eagles keepers. Pls GR. Should invite her to Egypt now.

A FIFA-assisted win for France. Dubious penalty award. Then another dubious call to replay the penalty after it was missed! As if they felt that the only way Nigeria was going to concede today was via penalty kick. If FIFA don’t want African countries to participate at the world cup, all they have to do is say so, and we will stay away! Instead of calling it WORLD CUP, they can call it EURO-AMERICAS cup, because it is only countries from these continents that are favored. This is becoming a real show of shame. FIFA events are full of obvious off field manipulations by FIFA to ensure that African countries fall by the wayside. A big lesson for us Africans. When preparing for World cups, prepare to face, not just the eleven players of your opponent, but be ready also for the Referee, VAR, and other FIFA tricks.

Truly Gallant display by the FALCONS. It absolutely not time to come home yet. Take a look Guys!

The Present 3rd place team standings
    1. China 4points 0(Goal difference)
    2. Australia 3points 0
    3. Nigeria 3 points -2
    4. Argentina 1 point
    .
    .
    6. Chile 0 point -5

Let all hope Argentina draws there match against Scotland that also have the Chance to by-pass Nigeria if they score lots of goals against Argentina without conceding. But I bet that match might likely end in a draw cuz both teams are coming into the game with same expectation of qualifying as Best-3rd.
For Chile, they are clearly favorite against “The whipping team” Thailand and if they should score Thailand more than 4 goals, that could mean danger for Nigeria. But I have this certainty we’ll make it to the next stage.

    UP SUPER FALCONS!!

See France vs Nigeria clip. One of the comments by GBOLLY BOBO:

It was clear that FIFA wanted France to win and they sure did make it happen for the host. Good for you, FIFA. This was a stolen match.
Nigeria. Hold your head up high. The world noticed the prejudice against you.

  • Pompei 5 years ago

    Another comment by OWLSSHADOW:

This game was horrifically rigged. TWO French players were encroaching on the penalty area (1:27), and the Nigerian goalkeeper was barely off her line—so little that this would have NEVER been called in a men’s FIFA World Cup. This was a disgrace to the game of football. Selective VAR calls are RUINING the beautiful game and exposing even more corruption within FIFA.

  • Pompei 5 years ago

FIFA, VAR, TV Commentaries, Referee and France players, plus French crowd, all of them, versus our gallant Nigeria Ladies. Our girls tried. This wan pass them. No be football matter again. This is politics and corruption. FIFA is a disgrace! A bloody joke that is no longer funny! VAR is being used selectively to advance FIFA interests. What hope for the lowly countries? Between the Referee AND VAR, results can be manipulated with ease. The beautiful game we know and love is being ruined! The custodians of the game (FIFA) are the ones who are destroying it!
No matter what happens, whether they qualify for the next round or not, the SUPER FALCONS have made a STATEMENT. If they have to come home, they should be welcomed with pride. They did not win FIFA’s corrupt rubbish of a trophy, but they have won our hearts with their gallant and courageous performance!

  • VAR is really killing football

  • They should advance ooo, they are the best losers

  • These ladies are heroes and Im proud of them.

  • Olupotan 5 years ago

I have always had belief in the Super Falcons but their display against France made me so proud of them. I can’t remember the last time the Super Falcons have such an assured performance. France came into the game thinking it would be a whitewash for us but met a completely different team, who held their own against the might of the world superpowers. Whatever happens these ladies are my heroines and has given me the extra belief not to give up watching them.

    Questions for FIFA hierachy

How are the super falcons so rated so lowly in the FIFA monthly rankings that Korea and some other countries we are far better than are ahead of us in the global ranking?

    Qualifications:
These girls are already celebrated irrespective of qualifications to the next round or not. It would be a bonus for them if they manage to Nick one of the places for best lossers. The first game against Norway had done the irredeemable damage as we could have gotten something out of that game if they had shown the same panache and bravery against their last two opponents.

Coach Dennerby should be given praise for bringing to bare his coaching repertoire of tactics. It was glaring the ladies have been well drilled and coached. How do we explain the same country that completely walloped and disgraced us just a year ago in their own backyard could not even muster a shot on target against the same team in the same place? It could be only a sound Technical brilliance that could have done that. It’s high time we respected these coaches, Dennerby and Gernot.
Something tells me if we barely manage to qualify for the next round our ladies would shock the next opponents.

    VAR CONTROVERSY:
clearly we seemed cheated with the VAR but the law will always take its course. Unfortunately, we have been a victim of one of the new laws of the beautiful game. Howbeit, the referees can be consistent without prejudice in the application of these laws and not give undue advantages to some untouched fellows.

However, the law that a goalkeeper should have one of his legs on the line is sure a mammoth advantage to the penalty taker and we would hardly be seeing goalkeepers making saves on penalty kicks. The law should be balanced for both the taker and the keeper.

    • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

If the law would not permit a penalty taker to take a first touch before striking the ball, then it shouldnt permit a goalkeeper to step off his line before the ball is struck. That law (as well as the no encroachment rule) has always been in existence, but somehow, referees havent been strict with its enforcement. I seems the managers of the rules and ethics of the game simply woke up now and choose to enforce that hard stance.

      • If a Center Referee whose duty it is to inform or instruct the goalkeeper in the position her feet should be located before attempting a save, fails to do so, the Ref therefore has no legal privilege to order a retake of the penalty because the goalkeeper has no rules to follow. The Ref cheated and victimized the young African Goalkeeper. The Ref does not have the knowledge of the rule of the game let alone acceptable temperament; she would not have made the call a Spanish or European or North American team. Disgusting

  • joelspets 5 years ago

well said everyone two things still baffles me.
    1. My question is, if France had scored the first penalty, would the second one be re-taken? why were the French players over looked as they actually entered the box.

    2. the same rubbish applies to Rohr at World can cup AGAINST Argentina.. see no NIGERIAN or black coach will sit back and take those pressures last night without making at least one substitution in the lacking area. untill yesterday I never understood the true meaning of racism. this white guys should be fired. our coaches shoud sit tight upgrade themselves and stop their nonsense corrupt behaviours whenever they are opportuned.

  • Steve 5 years ago

My take is that the VAR referees should not come from the same continent!!… Why should a Netherland official head the VAR team against a next door neighbour France?.. Why didn’t they picked an Asian VAR referee for the match ?..You may recalled that desire Oparanozie was impeded in the eighteen yard of Norway during a conner kick , a norwagean player was holding her neck , yet it was over ruled and was not called for , a clear cut penalty that could have levelled scores for falcons on that day !!.And probably we could have gotten a better result moving forward .Surely there is racial politics on all these no matter how you see it !!

  • Chima E Samuels 5 years ago

Opinions are aired and some people due to their busy body life of always trying to talk into you when you say A the come with B and when you say B they say no A.

I’m referring to drey he doesn’t only lack manners or proper upbringing but he goes beyond not to remain in his little corner. Yesterday I was so gutted by his involvement in my analysis.

An ex footballer Eniola Aluko via Twitter yesterday made a statement of the referee been wrong to call for a replay because the ball made no contact with the goalkeeper who came out of the line if that been the yardstick for the retake. And I also share same opinion.

After the match alot of calls was purely biased and every expert was never in support of this so called officiating and this is what I have been deliberating on prior to this tournament of African teams suffering racial officaiting.

And here come the pig coming from no where to say a word against me. Let it be said that it is only a witch or wizard that comes to insult someone he doesn’t know or feels intimidated about. I have tried to educate this boy ever since but when I realised he had more issues I just left him behind but still he looks out to forcefully get my wrath.

I am using this medium to say a word of prayer or the opposite to him if ever in his life he sees my comment and tries to make a negative talk let God from Heaven add pain to him in ways he can not see and if he decides to walk away from my comment then I wish him safety.

I am saying this because I can’t be on here relating with someone who has so much disrespect and disgust that I don’t even know in real life using anonymous name to get at me from nowhere.

My love for sports brings me here and even despite pleas to quit commenting on the forum to avoid strange beings like drey I refuse to adhere because the passion of sports comes first before negative spirits that I know from nowhere and propably will never have anything to do with in life.

As for Nigeria football if the Authorities don’t send a complaints to fifa or caf to address this bias treatment then it’s their own cup of tea because I remember recently what transpired BTW Esperance and Casablanca. Afcon is also ahead by then it will be us against North Africa officiating.

Only truth will set the world free!

So when did eniola aluko become head of FIFA rules and ethics committee…if all footballers know the rules of the game, why does fifa waste money to organize seminars to update them before the start of every competition. It is only Illiterate wannabe experts like you that have been faulting that decision…you claim you reside in the part of the world where internet is free yet you have not emancipated yourself from the mental poverty that chased you out of your clan. Your swine of a mother didnt teach you never to wish death on a being you never game life too. Your WONDERFUL upbringing taught you to send thunder to destroy peoples household when you cant measure up with them. I can see you are well brought up. What useless wrath do you have that cannot boil water beyond room temperature…LMAO..??? You really think so highly of yourself you know.
You are using this medium to pray I experience pain…..this isnt even your tenth time…you’ve prayed death for me many times…I dont think it is the living God you serve…maybe its the small chi your father brought you up to serve that you are referring to. Even the heavens must be waving heads in shame as to how stupid a creation like you is.
Who is begging you to quit or not to quit. What value have you added to yourself talk more of adding to this forum. If you are frustrated with your miserable life go and swallow rat poison.

    • Oakfield 5 years ago

If it were an African team, would they have sent a player out after awarding a penalty and cause the penalty to be retaken if the keeper slightly stepped away from her line? My brother, this is racism, it has nothing to do with illiteracy abeg! Why didn’t they apply the law when mascarano was blleding profusely on the pitch in our match against Argentina. The referee and other FIFA officials there present saw him but refused to apply the law which stipulates that a player should leave the pitch immediately if he’s bleeding. Again, would the referee had ordered a retake of the penalty if the French had scored the initial kick? This is racisim which ever way we tend to look at it!

      • Lawrence 5 years ago

Ask Dr Drey we dey talk wetin happen yesterday he dey talk about korea Senegal. I tire o this trend must not continue because there is no need for us participating in future tournaments.

        • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

No…korea vs senegal was a game of hockey or gymnastics…not football. Or maybe Senegal that benefited from the rule must be from Europe, not Afrcia.

I sorry for your parent eiya the school dey are sending you to will be waste when matter go rise enter your head.

      • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

Oga…the VAR adjudged ebere to have impeded Asseyi who would have been ‘through on goal’ in the penalty box. You can say it wasn’t intentional, but the moment a defender catches an opponent in the box…its a penalty, even if the defender was having advantage of the ball. What does the law says about impeding an opponent who is through on goal…? A yellow card if not the last defender or a red card if he/she is the last defender. Ebere had a yellow in the first half and promptly got another for the offense.
Pls when macherano was bleeding…how many of our players or coaches took advantage of the situation to call the referee’s attention to it..? i bet even our players do not know the rules of this game to the letter…and that is why FIFA organizes seminars to educate them before the start of tournaments like this.
If the initial penalty had been scored..the ref is at liberty to hand advantage to the french team…its like when an infringement occurs in the build up to a goal…the referee is empowered to allow the goal if the advantage is utilized and recall the foul if the advantage is lost.
        Fin and Klaar.

        • Oakfield 5 years ago

Didn’t var see that mascharano was bleeding? Must players cry before they get judgement? Did the French players appeal or protest to the referee that ebere stepped over the line in the second kick? Why wasn’t the referee at libery to overlook that blunder since the French didn’t protest. My brother, let’s call a spade a spade, we were robbed, period.

Sorry…the usage of the VAR is still currently being confined to mostly offside and penalty box incidences…infact it was at the U20 WC that its use was expanded to out of the ball infringements, since these ‘lesser competitions’ are mostly used to test run new rules, technology or innovations to the game. At the senior men’s level…it is still very very much restricted. SO the VAR couldnt have been used to spot macherano’s bleeding until the ref’s attention was called to it. And if you duely remember, the ref did send macherano to go get treated (sometime in that game around the time when the arguement about rojo’s handball had died down.
The french players didnt need to appeal. The ref was right there and saw it….Even i myself say it and even dropped an hint on my live comments yesterday on the live blog that the penalty would be retaken, way before the ref even ordered it to be retaken. I know lots of your are still hurting….but there was no robery anywahere….fans should just learn to follow the game more with less sentiments and avail themselves the updates rules on the game.
I’m very sure most people still do not realize till now that defenders can now receive goal kick passes from the keepers in the penalty box. That’s one of the new updates too. When people see that happening in our next game they will claim its unfair officiating.
Others include: There will be no rebounds from penalties, Handballs inside the area, Substituted players can leave the field anywhere, Players can touch the ball in the area after a goalkeeper kicks it out. Coaches will now receive yellow and red cards much like players….and so on

Guys I watched the highlights now, that was no way a penalty as the French girl threw herself in with no intent from Ebere. Even so, should a penalty be given, definitely Ebere did not deserve a 2nd yellow card for that. Pinnick should protest the card given to Ebere here surely

Yes i couldn’t eat i just tire. Everything was just black because the referee make sure our girls labour for 90mins then he debrived them the precious reward even God will not be happy for such injustice. It is unfair to fight with high tactics and blood and still loose to criminalisation.

Honestly, the referee gave the French too much undue advantage. I mean, France had nothing to lose if they hadn’t won that game, they’d still top the group if they had drawn. Really can’t fathom the rationale behind the decision to retake the penalty. Some referees would overlook the second blunder (and even the first incident that led to the penalty) by the goal keeper but she wickedly used var against us. Would we have be given the same opportunity as was given to France if we were in the same position. This is racisim at its peak! That wicked witch in The person of a referee was hell bent to see that our gals got eliminated. U can’t send a player out and give penalties twice against same team that is already deficit in numbers! This is wickedness. To hell with the law, the whites always remember and apply the law to it’s fullest when it comes to Africa but tend to bend or overlook it when it affects affect them. That’s why I really don’t pitty them when they get heavily scammed by small boys from this part of the world bcos they are such a bunch of wicked racist fellows!! The gals fought well and God will cause them to qualify for the next round.

VAR or No VAR what happened lastnight was pure tactical robbery or can I say simple rubbery. It a poor deliberate officiating, this technology can be used to make or destroy you its depends on what they allow to fly.. If u notice the alleged foul was only shown from one angle and not 3dimensional same goes for the penalty kick. Which means I cld exaggerate what I want d viewers to see. Its doesn’t really mean d offender was quity.
2ndly I m also of d opinion that if that 1st penalty had scored, wld d 2nd be given?
3rdly I m also of d opinion that as long as the penalty whistle is blown both party have the right to make their moves so far you remain in ur zone.
Lastly d keeper didn’t even touch that ball. I think the VAR and rule is biased. As Along as we have human factor making the decisions directly on the pitch or in the studio. It wld always be manipulated and their will always be controversy.

If the French had scored the initial kick, would that witch of a referee have ordered a retake????? Would they have checked var to know if she overstepped the line after they had scored????Daylight robbery!!!! Period!

    @SundayOOliseh
Extremely proud of our Super falcons of Nigeria vs France at the world cup. These girls gave it everything against a French side cheered on by a near full stadium & a doubtful retaken penalty. I am sad, disappointed, but proud of these girls!

Hehehehehehe…Sunday Oliseh is the one that makes rules for fifa abi..? Dont go and read up the fifa rules and update yourself rather than reading other ignorant people’s tweets. You will tell me if Nigeria is the first nation in this world cup to be victims of retaken penalty. LMAO.
Referees in this WC even make extra efforts to go and remind the goal keepers to remain on their lines when about to face a penalty. Lolz

  • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

Italy must be an AFRICAN country too.
    1. How can that slight body check be a penalty
    2. Why will the ref allow the penalty goal when the keeper stepped off her lines and there was encroachment into the box before the penalty was hit.
FIFA and their rest are RACISTS…!!!
African countries like ITALY should pull put from their world cups abeg..!!

Dr Drey, u are one person i love to read his comments and i respect u bro, buh on this i think u shld see it again, the truth be told african countries hardly get the treatment they duly deserve in competitions like this. we should not be bamboozled by the FIFA rules cos even FIFA are not clean in their dealings. That incident does not deserve a penalty call, and besides the keeper made no contact with the ball, hence penalty should not have been retaken. The VAR should also have shown us from other angles where nnadozie’s leg was wen the ball was kicked. so the truth is they know what they are doing. Nigeria was robbed and even the world have seen the injustice that befell us that why a whole lot of persons have been talking, even Mikel Obi said something about the incidence this morning but was been careful with his words. Finally Dr Drey u are good guy and same with Chima. you guys should pls quit the habit of insulting yourselves. it does not actually make any sense. Thanks

    • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

My brother…this is the same reason why we will continue to harm ourselves with sentiments again and again while we continuing blaming everyone else except ourselves for our failures.
Our ignorance of simple rules will continue to haunt us again and again. As much as we will want to deny it
      1. Ebere’s outstretched leg struck Asseyi on a left hamstring. So much was the force that it even swept her off the ground and turned her a few degrees into the air. That was a clear penalty. I saw it even before the ref consulted the VAR, i was quite surprised she didn’t award the penalty ab initio. Once u catch an opponent in the box in a 50:50 situation, you cant escape it…it is a penalty…and you get carded for it. I really dont know why we are arguing these things.
      2. Rules are rules and hence must be obeyed. Ive posted several videos on this platform since yesterday….one of the rules now being seriously enforced…Goal keepers MUST, I repeat MUST remain on their lines (at least one foot must be on the line) when a penalty is being taken. We saw many teams being penalized for that at the last U20 WC and even at this world cup too. If the penalty is saved (or lost as the case is with france) it WILL be retaken, because the advantage is lost and the goalkeeper gets carded…its that simple. If the penalty is scored the goal will be upheld just the same way a referee allows play to go on when a real goal scoring opportunity present itself even if an infringement has occurred in the buildup to the goal. If the goal is scored, it is sustained, if it is lost, play is brought back to the point where the infringement occurred
      3. Ive heard many complain about encroachment…the truth is that players from both teams encroached, however none encroached deep enough to interfere with play or gain undue advantage. Watch 10 videos of in-game penalties and i assure you will find encroachment in 9 out of 10 of them with the ref allowing the goal to stand. And please, i need someone to educate me….does the refeere cancel a penalty outrightly because there was encroachment or is the penalty ordered to be re-taken..? The last time i checked, the referee does the latter. So if the referee had canceled the 2nd penalty for encroachment and ordered a re-take, what guarantees do we have that it would be scored…?
      .
The earlier we evolve our mentalities beyond this FIFA is against Africa nonsense, the better for us, otherwise we will keep making same mistakes again and again and keep getting punished.
Our lack of knowledge of the rules got us out of the U17 WC in 2003, our lack of knowledge of the rules threw us out of qualifying for Germany 2006, our lack of knowledge of the rules made us not to qualify for 2012 afcon. Our lack of knowledge is our biggest undoing on the big stage. Unfortunately, we wont blame ourselves…it is fifa that we will blame…and they fall into the same pit again and again.
Ive seen wrong calls made against European teams in FIFA competitions and ive seen wrong calls made against south american teams….Ive seen African teams benefit from fifa rules and ive seen other teams too benefit…..but the idea of FIFA being after africa is pure crap and absolute illiterate reasoning.
If fifa where to be after africa, how did we win our 8 U17 WCs, 1 U20 WC, 2 Olympics and other medals we have won thus far.

Laws of the Game changes 2019-2020
Posted on 18 March, 2019 by Jan ter Harmsel
Laws of the Game changes 2019-2020. IFAB announces some changes. Biggest changes is on handballs and the place subbed players have to leave the field of play and the position of the goalkeeper at penalty kicks.

Laws of the Game changes 2019-2020

    Handball changes
On the topic of defining handball, a decision was taken by The IFAB to provide a more precise and detailed definition for that constitutes handball, in particular with regard to the occasions when a non-deliberate/accidental handball will be penalised. For example a goal scored directly from the hand/arm (even if accidental) and a player scoring or creating a goal-scoring opportunity after having gained possession/control of the ball from their hand/arm (even if accidental) will no longer be allowed.

    Subbed player leaving FOP
Following experiments in different parts of the world, the AGM also approved changes to the Laws of the Game related to a player being substituted having to leave the field of play at the nearest boundary line, yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials and the ball not having to leave the penalty area at goal kicks and defending team free kicks in the penalty area.

Goalkeeper one foot on line with penalty kick
Additional approved Law changes included: measures to deal with attacking players causing problems in the defensive ‘wall’, changing the dropped ball procedure, giving a dropped ball in certain situations when the ball hits the referee and the goalkeeper only being required to have one foot on the line at a penalty kick. The changes also mention: ” cannot stand behind the line”.

    DOGSO and SPA
The DOGSO changes in the Laws of the Game changes are reviewed and will remain the same. “The feedback for both changes has been overwhelmingly positive and The IFAB has not received a single complaint; not even from the public.”

Some case studies abou these DOGSO law changes:

Yellow card for DOGSO situations in challenge for the ball
DOGSO by pulling is still a red card
    Free kick changes
When there is a ‘wall’ of three or more defenders, the attackers are not allowed within 1m (1 yd) of the wall; an attacker less than 1m (1yd) from the ‘wall’ when the kick is taken will be penalised with an indirect free kick
When the defending team takes a free kick in their own penalty area, the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the penalty area before it can be played
    Dropped ball
If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper
If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch
In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away
If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded
    Other decisions
A yellow card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed
With goal kicks: the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area
The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack)
If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee
A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC

Changes in force on 1st of June 2019
All changes come into force on 1st June 2019. Competitions starting before that date may apply the changes from the start of their competition, at an agreed point during the competition (e.g. after the mid-season break) or may delay them until no later than the start of the next competition.

    • I love ur analysis and depth of info, but u haven’t commented on the fact that some French players were inside the box before the penalty was taken.

Thanks Dr Drey for the enlightenment, but i read this morning that even football analyst condemned the rash decision of the referee. Thanks anyways it not a topic of debate anymore the deed is already done. let just look forward.
