Ghana Set To Name Hughton New Black Stars Coach

Ghana Set To Name Hughton New Black Stars Coach

Former Brighton manager Chris Hughton will take over from Milovan Rajevac as new head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana.

The Ghana Football Federation and Sports Ministry met on Friday and settled for Hughton as Rajevac’s successor.

Former international Otto Addo was the favourite for the job, but has been dropped for the former Norwich City gaffer.

According to Ghanasoccernet.com , Hughton, who travelled to Ghana to visit his family, has been approved by the government and GFA to become substantive coach.

He will be named as soon as next week.

The new development means the 63-year-old has postponed his return journey to England.

Ghana will take on eternal rivals Nigeria in a 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs next month.

  • Now am totally scared that Nigeria will not even qualify for World Cup. This was Obafemi Martin’s former coach at Newcastle way back then.

    • Golden Child 2 years ago

@Ben, there is no need for fear. We need to remain calm and focused but more importantly, we need to work on our weak areas. The goal keeping dept needs a major shake up, Alloy agu needs to be excused from the team and a new goal keeper trainer in the mould of ike shorunmu or Carl Ikeme (if up for it) should replace him. Other goal keeping options should be explored, adeleye , Arthur okonkwo & tobias (if available) should be invited.

The attacking midfield has been a challenge for the SE in recent times. We haven’t had a reliable play maker since mikel obi. I believe in Amoo, his fearlessness, speed, low centre of gravity which gives him great balance, vision & passing range will give the team a different dimension and the beneficiaries would be the strikers. We need M.olise and lookman on the wings, the NFF needs to intensify effort to convince olise and complete lookman’s switch.

For all the industry of Awoniyi, I do not think he is ready to compete with osimhen for the centre forward position, we need to look at alternative options like dessers and sadiq needs more time in the SE ( There is something there).

Finally, the technical bench. Yobo needs to go but I will keep aigbogun. His drills during the afcon was quite good. There are rumours that the NFF have settled for Eguavoen and amuneke, if true then we are in good hands.

Lest I forget, enough with undeserving players like shehu, noble. Musa can stay on for his exemplary leadership.

If we implement all of the above, Ghana will be spanked in both legs.

    • onwajunior 2 years ago

@Ben trust me there is nothing to be scared of. I believe the Afcon team (with the inclusion of a few who couldn’t make it) is enough to execute our WC playoffs. Our team was the strongest, and can beat any team. We just had a bad day against Tunisia. I don’t see Ghana stopping us. The coaches know we messed up at Afcon, the players know what’s up. In fact if u ask me, I’d say we should keep Maduka as no. 1. After that mistake, he’ll kill somebody b4 he allows any goal. We’ll come out on top… Trust me.

  • The last club Hughton coached before he became jobless was Nottingham Forest where he lost all the six championship matches. Nottingham didn’t think twice before sacking him. No skin there.

  • @Golden Child, the reason I don’t mention players here as part of any line up no matter the opponent or competition is that you never know what the game plan is or how that player an fit into the game plan.

Or even if he is ready for national team duty. I guess our exit at AFCON should be a great lesson to as one people who claim this or that player to be invited.

A clear sieve to remove the shaft from the diamonds is their club performance especially transfers to bigger teams.
Whether we like it or not, that is the performance yardstick.

Not because you are scoring goals in some club side somewhere, that you believe you should be invited.

Innocent Bonke that was called by Rohr to Super Eagles was because of his performance at UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.

That tournament helped him to show his talent against other teams outside the Swedish league.

Your reservations are understood but as the old saying goes, if you don’t buy the ticket, you don’t win the lottery.

If there is a fifa window before the double headers, the NFF should organise a friendly to try out some of these players. That is the objective of friendlies; to strengthen the team.

This was one of the things that frustrated me with Rohr; wasting friendlies. Something tells me that adeleye would do very well.

Whilst one can not be 100% sure but judging by the characteristics of his game; his distribution with his feet, long throw outs to outfield players, cat like reflexes , positioning, eccentricity (Most good goal keepers have this trait), good handling , shot stopping, keeper sweeper abilities and confidence, I think we may have found the solution but time and chance will be the judge.

Our greatest bottleneck is the gk trainer. He has been at the helm and in 6 years, his judgement has proven to be suspect. No one wins a tournament without a good goal keeper, you may win some games but at some stage your defense will be breached and the goal keeper will be called upon.

If they gloss over these details and persist with agu and his current personnel then the world cup could be in jeopardy and peradventure we qualify for the wc, the tourney will a compilation of gk howlers.

Eye brows were raised in afcon 2019 when akpeyi was declared as no.1 but we saw how well uzoho fared in the 3rd place March.

Then maduka was declared as substantive no.1 , he has struggled to justify that position whilst he has refused to give opportunities to adeleye or afelokhai.

Height can not be the only criteria for selecting good gk, Campos, casillas , higuita were not tall goal keepers but were excellent goal keepers. Eguavoen seems to fancy guadiola’s passing game and as such a gk with good feet will suit his style.

Ghana is not serious. What does Chris Hughton know about African football? The terrain and and all that… They should have push harder and more for GENERAL ROHR.. with more money/very very good pay he will be convinced to change his principle of not wanting to play against his former team…

    • @Monkey Post, don’t be so quick to disregard Chris Houghton.
First of all, he is half Ghanianfor that matter. Even though he wasn’t too successful at Newcastle because of his rigid coaching style like Rohr, he still won some matches and wasn’t a total write off.

Plus the tactics he used at Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest can be quite adaptable to an African football game.

In all, don’t write him off completely.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

It’s alright @Ben I wish him all the best. But GENERAL ROHR five years in Africa and playing against his former team would have been a huge advantage.

    • KENNETH 2 years ago

Idiot, why must Rorh coach Ghana, what did he do in 6 years. If you want to hear the truth he was just fortunate that Nigeria had Players. He can go back and coach Burkina faso, Gabon, Niger. What did he do with those teams before coming to the Eagles

I will personally pay for your consultation and full treatment fee, the guy will do a video consultation because I know you can’t even get a Medical Visa to us here as you just don’t qualify. @ Dr Bank. Don’t worry yourself about Igbekun Abo. He is just getting excited over only God knows why. I personally, will lose every bit of respect I have for Drey, if he decides to start replying such vulgar words. DONT TAKE IGBEKUN SERIOUS. NOT WORTH IT. PURE WASTE OF TIME.

  • Marvelous 2 years ago

Please @ Dr. Drey for the respect I have you in this forum. Don’t respond that son of Shegun Odegbami.

A lizard is a lizard everywhere. It does not matter if it is from UK or any part of the world. While I have respect for Hughton as a person, I don’t have any for his work. We don’t have to subject ourselves to unnecessary trauma. I believe if our coaches do the due diligence, we will defeat Ghana both home and away.

If the man didn’t succeed as a club manager, what are guarantees that he will as a national team manager? A lizard is a Lizard regardless of change of environment.

I commented this way because of the love I have for my country.

I come in peace dear all.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

A LIZARD is a LIZARD but at least this LIZARD is better than that WALL GECKO who couldn’t pass the round of 16.LMFAO!!!!

    • Chidiomimi 2 years ago

This Eageovon is far better than Rhor. If you call him a wall gecko, the Rhor does not exsist at all.

I come in peace dear friend

    • KENNETH 2 years ago

But the Wall gecko had days to assemble that team and still impress. We probably would have been nervous if it was the orangutan that took us to the championship. Maybe teams like sudan and Guinea bissau would have won games against us

    • KENNETH 2 years ago

Sometimes you just want to rant and be recognized. Seems your banana’s are running low. Please which division 2 team did Tunisia parade at the nations cup. Please mention there players that ply there trade in division 2. Obviously u one of those who don’t know crap about soccer. But sit on the internet to read about it. So because an assistant stood in place for the coach, so you want to tell me the coach didn’t pick the team. This alone tells me you clueless

  • Igbekun Abo 2 years ago

Monkey post, you are a credit to this platform. I may not agree with you on Rohr but I respect your tenacity in standing up to bullies. We resent bullies. We will wipe them off the face of the earth. Keep up the fight Monkey Post.

What did Maduka Okoye do? Concede a goal from a very good strike that could have beaten any other keeper at the afcon?, nobody is concerned about the defence not doing its job and the team failing to rescue the game by scoring to tie or win?, how many goals did Onana and world’s best keeper from Senegal Concede?, what about the coach and his tactics on the day, did he get it right by simply playing the predictable formation?.
