Onome Didih delivered a sensational performance to claim gold in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Nigerian lifter dominated the competition from start to finish, setting three new Commonwealth Games records on her way to the title.
Didih opened with a record-breaking lift of 93kg in the snatch, before raising the bar again with a 113kg clean and jerk, another Games record. Her combined 206kg total also established a new Commonwealth Games record.

India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav settled for the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze after finishing with 178kg.
The triumph marked Team Nigeria’s second gold medal in weightlifting at the Glasgow 2026 Games, following Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s victory in the men’s 71kg event earlier on Monday.
Team Nigeria’s medal haul now stands at nine medals—five gold and four silver—as the country continues its impressive campaign in Glasgow.
