Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered another dominant display to win the gold medal in the women’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The reigning world champion shattered her own world record with a sensational lift of 175kg, finishing with a total of 134.8 points to claim top spot on the podium.
It was an even more memorable occasion for Team Nigeria as compatriot Rita Ferdinand secured the silver medal with a lift of 158kg.
Ferdinand’s effort also surpassed the previous world record, completing a remarkable Nigerian one-two finish in the event.

Australia’s Hani Watson settled for the bronze medal after lifting 111.5kg.
The result marked Nigeria’s second clean sweep of the top two positions in para powerlifting on the opening day of the Games.
Earlier, Esther Nworgu won gold in the women’s lightweight event after setting a new Games record with a 119kg lift, while Esther Oyema claimed silver with 115.5kg.
Roland Ezuruike opened Team Nigeria’s medal account by winning silver in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting event.
Oluwafemiayo’s world-record feat further underlined Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting as the country continued its impressive medal haul in Glasgow.
