Nigerian striker Brown Ideye scored the only goal as Aris Thessaloniki beat Xanthi FC 1-0 away in the Greek Cup first-leg round of 16 clash on Wednesday, Completesports.com reports.

It was Ideye’s seventh goal in 20 appearances in all competitions for Aris Thessaloniki this season.

The return leg will see Aris Thessaloniki host Xanthi on January 14, with the winner advancing into the quarter-finals.

The last time Aris Thessaloniki won the Greek Cup was in 1970.

They last played in the final in 2010 where they lost 1-0 to Panathinaikos.

Ideye was a member of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

In May 2010, he was called up as part of the 30-man team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

He was not part of the final 23-man squad, but was subsequently called up after a knee injury to John Obi Mikel ruled the midfielder out of the competition.

He represented Nigeria at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. He played five games in the tournament and scored one goal, against Costa Rica in the team’s first group game.
