Guardiola Hails City After Schalke Rout

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City will continue to fight for Champions League glory after booking a place in the quarter-finals.

City, inspired by Leroy Sane, who scored one and set up three powered into the Champions League quarter-finals with an emphatic 7-0, 10-2 aggregate success, over Schalke at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Sergio Aguero began the rout with two goals while Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus also got on the scoresheet.

In the lead up to the game, Guardiola had described City as “teenagers” in Champions League terms, but their convincing victory was a strong statement to the rest of the competition. “When I said we are a teenage team, I didn’t say we are not going to fight.

We are going to try,” the City boss said. “If it doesn’t work, I am sorry, but I assure you next season we are going to try. “This competition is incredibly tough, there are incredible teams, so when we are through the group stages I am happy.

It is so nice to be in the quarter-finals for the third time in our history.” Meanwhile, Guardiola claimed Sane should be delivering even more after his devastating performance.

Asked if Sane was at his best, Guardiola said: “No. After the first goal, yes. Before, no. He was not aggressive enough in the first 20 minutes.”
