Hasenhuttl Highlights Redmond Improvement

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been quick to highlight the improvement of Nathan Redmond since his arrival at the club. The former RB Leipzig boss took over the managerial reigns at St Mary’s Stadium in December following the sacking of Mark Hughes and he has won three of his eight games in charge.

Victories over Arsenal, Huddersfield and most recently Leicester have helped ease the Saints’ relegation fears, with the performances of Redmond particularly catching the eye.

The 24-year-old had only scored nine goals during his two-and-a-half years with Southampton prior to Hasenhuttl’s arrival, but he has netted four times in his last six appearances under the Austrian.

Redmond has also shown the defensive side of his game, not least after right-back Yan Valery was sent-off against Leicester last weekend, and Hasenhuttl has been pleased with the all-round improvement of the one-time England international. “That’s a new Nathan Redmond,” Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo when reflecting on his performance against Leicester. “It was not cool for him, it was really hard working. That’s what I want to see from him.”

Asked if Redmond has been less selfish of late, Hasenhuttl added: “That’s a good word, I agree. I have spoken with him and he has seen that in this team it’s 100 per cent necessary to not get comfortable.”
