Hasenhuttl Plays Down Long Injury Fears

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is optimistic the injury Shane Long suffered at the weekend is not that bad. Republic of Ireland international Long came on for midfielder Oriol Romeu at half-time in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur before the forward then had to be replaced after picking up a hamstring issue.

The 32-year-old, who went off for Scottish star Stuart Armstrong, will be monitored over the next couple of days before a further assessment is made on his hamstring issue.

When asked about Long’s situation, Hasenhuttl appeared to play down fears of a long spell on the sidelines.

He said: “He got a kick on the hamstring and I don’t know how big the injury is. Maybe it’s not so bad.” Long will have an extended period to recover from the injury as the Saints are not back in action until after the international break on March 30, when they make the trip to the AMEX Stadium to take on Brighton.
