Former England striker Emile Heskey believes that securing a piece of domestic silverware is vital for Xabi Alonso if he is to alleviate the intense managerial pressure at Chelsea.
Despite a shaky start defensively, highlighted by conceding a league-high 12 goals before the international break, Chelsea bounced back in style with a commanding 5-1 victory over Bournemouth, climbing to sixth in the Premier League table.

With the Blues absent from European competition this season following a disappointing finish last term, their schedule is significantly lighter. While this leaves them free to focus heavily on a domestic push, Alonso is still searching for the elite-level success that defined his historic, unbeaten double-winning campaign with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023–24.
While the Bournemouth rout showcased the team’s immense attacking ceiling, Heskey stressed that consistency and early trophies are non-negotiable at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to Casinolyze, the former Liverpool and Leicester City star explained how domestic cups can serve as a lifeline for elite managers.
“There’s an expectation when you’re at the bigger clubs. In the first year, I’d say you’re bedding in, but you still need a cup. In the second year you challenge, and in the third year you have to win, it’s the same with Xabi Alonso,” Heskey said.
“Winning things eases the pressure a lot. Securing the League Cup or the FA Cup early on eases the pressure and the burden on you.”

Drawing from his own playing days, Heskey noted how accessible early success can transform the psychological landscape of a club’s season:
“When I was playing, I went to three cup finals at Leicester, not many teams played their strongest eleven in the League Cup, and you could win it by March. It’s an early trophy you can take pressure off on.”
With the traditional weight of expectation pressing down on every Stamford Bridge boss, Heskey concluded that lifting the League Cup or FA Cup could provide the catalyst for a sustained, successful era under the Spanish tactician.
