Barcelona’s pursuit of Athletic Club sensation Nico Williams has reached a definitive end, with the player’s camp pulling back due to recurring financial roadblocks at Camp Nou.
Williams first emerged on the Catalan radar following his electric displays during Spain’s Euro 2024 championship run. Although Athletic Club stood firm against initial interest, talks picked up again when the Basque club signaled they would accept his €60M release clause.

However, deep-seated financial concerns in Barcelona cast a shadow over the move. Unable to guarantee his squad registration under strict LaLiga regulations, the deal stalled.
Fearing the consequences during a vital World Cup cycle, Williams chose long-term security in Bilbao, signing a massive renewal until 2035 with a bumped-up €90M release clause.
Agent Félix Tainta shed light on how close the move came to fruition, noting: “He renewed in December 2023, even though he was due to be a free agent in 2024.

“We understood he couldn’t leave for free. We renewed with the same clause. Nico had the idea of leaving.
“However, in a World Cup year, if there were no guarantees that he could play, we couldn’t take the risk.”
