I Would Have Stopped Playing For Argentina If… –Messi

Argentina icon, Lionel Messi has revealed that he would have retired from the senior national team if the team had failed to win the 2022 World Cup.

According to the 35-year-old, he is still a member of the men’s senior national team simply because they won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Speaking after Argentina defeated Australia 2-0 in a friendly game on Thursday, with Messi and German Pezzella getting on the scoresheet, the 35-year-old said he would not be in the Argentine side anymore had they not won the World Cup in 2022.

He said, as quoted by All About Argentina, “To be honest, if we hadn’t been the World Champions… I wouldn’t be in the national team anymore.”

Recall that La Albiceleste won the World Cup for the third time in their history with Messi absolutely dominating the tournament.

Messi also won the World Cup Golden Ball for the second time for his exploits and finished the tournament with seven goals and three assists.
