President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Daniel Igali says 2019 was an outstanding year for the sport in the country.
Igali made this known while speaking on Brila FM.
“Nigeria Wrestling Federation had an outstanding year in 2019. Our individual athletes met a lot of their targets. I’m very proud of the achievements of our coaches and athletes at the Nigeria Wrestling Federation this year,” the Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medallist with Canada said.
“At the Africa Championships in May this year, we yet again became African champions in female wrestling for the seventh time in a row which is a record by itself.
“At the African Games our wrestling team emerged overall champions in all three styles with seven gold medals, beating Egypt to second place, they had five gold medals.”
Igali added: “We went to the Pitch Games this year and had a world champion in Blessing Onyebuchi and Mercy Genesis was a silver medalist. Those were the only two medals Nigeria won at the World Pitch Games.
“We also had a bronze medal at the World Championships and another seventh place finish by Blessing Oborududu which was very close to a medal. And that was the third World Championships medal we are winning in four years which is about the best out of any team that I know of.”

Hello wrestling Federation Chairman, you have very well. But I will suggest that as this group of wrestlers are doing well, you should do well to take the sport to grass root to discover more talents that will take over in the nearest future for continuity of this sport.
