Ikeme Happy To Be Alive After Battle With Cancer

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme says is happy to be alive after successfully winning his battle against cancer.

Ikeme was diagnosed with acute Leukaemia in July 2017, but is now in complete remission a move which led to his early retirement from football.

The former Nigeria international goalkeeper reveals he was in shock and total disbelief when he was diagnosed with the illness.

“I kept asking myself why me, I am not a bad person,” Ikeme said in a documentary aired on Wolves TV.

“I was worried my daughter will be growing up without me.

“The first month (of treatment) was okay, but by the second month it took a toll on my body. It was going to be difficult.

“It was a lot of pain, I just had to keep riding it. I was determined.

“I am happy to be alive, just happy I could go home. I’m just happy to breathe fresh air, just a relief to me.

“I am truly grateful for every day.”

“She’s a blessing, I truly believe that. It did help at the time.

“Now I’m looking forward to my kids’ future.”

Ikeme who is now a TV pundit is yet to take up the Super Eagles coaching role in assistant capacity offered him by the Nigerian Football Federation.
