Isner Praises ‘Greatest Player Ever’ Federer

John Isner refused to blame his foot injury for his Miami Open final defeat to Roger Federer on Sunday. Federer won 6-1 6-4 to claim the Masters 1000 trophy in Miami, the 101st title of his career, in just over an hour. Isner clearly struggled with injury as the match progressed but the American insists the result would have been the same even if he was fully fit – although he feels the final would have been closer.

“Roger was too good,” said Isner. “In the first five games, I was fine. Nothing was bothering me. He was all over me. “Then this weird pain on the top of my foot, we’ll see what is. I’m hoping it’s nothing, but we’ll see. “It’s a terrible feeling because you’re on an island out there and you have no team-mates to hide behind and going up against the greatest player ever, playing in this incredible atmosphere, and my foot’s killing me.

“Not that I would have won the match, anyways, let’s make that clear, but I think I could have made for a more interesting match and one that was a little more fun.”
