Ahead of Nigeria’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, former Super Falcons coach, Godwin Izilein, has urged ex-internationals to throw their weight behind Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr in a bid to enable him to succeed.

Rohr has come under heavy criticisms after he released his 24-man squad for the AFCON qualifiers on March 27 and March 30 respectively.

The German tactician invited Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa despite being clubless since October 2020.

In a chat with NAN, Izilein noted that now is not the time to criticize the German tactician, as he is building a team that will rescue Nigeria from poor performances.

He also stated that Rohr has no justification for inviting Musa ahead of players that are in form and playing regularly for their clubs in Europe.

“You do not have to extend an invitation to players based on sentiment; rather, the invitation should be based on performances. There should not be an automatic shirt for anybody not doing well.

“To me, even if Ndidi, who is doing well today, does not perform in a month, he should be put aside. Rohr must take note of this, if he must succeed,” Ozilein said.

“He is giving us marketable young men who will give us the result. He is building a team that will rescue us from poor performance,” he stated.

  • Its amazing how these so called ex internationals think and speak.
    What makes them the experts?
All over the world the coach picks whom he wants based on his plans and takes responsibility for failure or success.
Go back down memory lane, france picked Giroud over players chumming out better performances at club level.
Eric cantina couldn’t make the team to France 98, I can go on and on. Nigerians kept on asking what was garba lawal doing in our teams yet every coach at the time invested him to the eagles set up and he always justified his inclusion.
Let all these selfice ex players turned agents leave our coach alone

Oliver Giroud was playing attached to a club unlike a clueless players who’s inactive for months. They’re two different examples. Musa has no business in that team, period. Stop encouraging mediocrity
