Kane Talks Up Trophy Focus

England captain Harry Kane says it is time for Tottenham’s success to be measured in trophies and has made winning silverware this season a priority.

PpSpurs have re-emerged as a true force in the English game under boss Mauricio Pochettino but despite coming close, are still to break their 11-year wait for a trophy.

They got to the Champions League final last season and have regularly gone deep into the domestic cup competitions, but have always fallen short.

Pochettino said this season will only be successful if they can lift some silverware, a sentiment that is echoed by star striker Kane. “The most important thing is to try and win a trophy,” the England skipper told PA.

“We spoke about it a lot, we know how difficult it is. “But I think we’ve proved in the last five years that we have a good enough squad. We just need to get the job done out on the pitch.

We’ll do everything we can to win something and I think it would give everyone at the club a big boost.

“Year-by-year we have progressed, but we still haven’t really got anything to show for it. “I think we’ve earned the respect of teams and fans around Europe, but we haven’t had that success of winning a trophy.

The players and the manager want to do that. We’ve been a success as how we’ve progressed as a club but we’re at the stage now where trophies and titles are the most important thing.”

Spurs have endured a mixed start to the Premier League campaign after beating Aston Villa 3-1 on the opening weekend of the season.

Since then, the north London outfit managed to draw 2-2 with reigning champions Manchester City before suffering a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of struggling Newcastle United.

The Lilywhites already find themselves five points behind Premier League frontrunners Liverpool and it will take some effort for Kane’s side to finish top of the pile come the end of the campaign.

Tottenham were able to strengthen t00hrough the summer after a couple of transfer windows with no new faces through the door.

However, the squad seems to have been unsettled by the contract situations regarding a handful of key first-team players.

Speculation is still rife surrounding the likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, so their futures need to be resolved before Tottenham can settle into the matter of winning trophies this season.
