La Bague Au Roi is being prepared for a festive outing in the King George VI Chase, trainer Warren Greatrex has confirmed. The eight-year-old mare enjoyed success over course and distance in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at the Kempton meeting last year.

And the three-mile Boxing Day showpiece is now firmly in the sights of the Lambourn handler looking ahead to the remainder of 2019. La Bague Au Roi saw her four-race unbeaten run over fences ended at Aintree in April in the Grade One Manifesto Novices’ Chase. But Greatrex is confident that she can make her mark in the King George VI, while he is plotting a path to Kempton with some run-outs ahead of the Christmas feature.
He said: “Looking forward, the Charlie Hall (Steeplechase at Wetherby on November 2) has always been in the back of my mind as a start-off point, but that is not a definite as there is also the Colin Parker Chase at Carlisle, which could be a possibility.
“I think I’ve got to keep the King George as the number one target as she won around the course and distance last year. She deserves to be looking at races like that. “She will get a mares’ allowance in the King George. It counted for a lot last year and there is every chance it will again this season as well.” Greatrex also revealed that the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury could be an alternative starting point.
