Lisicki Set For Shrewsbury Event

Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki is on the acceptance list for next month’s World Tennis Tour W60 Shrewsbury tournament.

Heather Watson and Katie Boulter are set to lead a strong British challenge in the 60,000 US dollars event, which will be the biggest women’s tennis event in the UK this year outside of the grass court season and the Fed Cup.

Boulter, the British number two, is currently ranked 97 in the world and reached the second round of the Australian Open earlier this month.

Watson, ranked just outside the world’s top 100, is a former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion and will be looking to put on a good show for the home fans between February 11 and 16.

Great Britain Fed Cup players Harriet Dart and Katie Swan are also in line to compete in the International Tennis Federation tournament to be played on the indoor courts at the Sundorne Road venue.

Dave Courteen, managing director at The Shrewsbury Club, said: “It’s going to be a very strong line-up and, while the entry list can change between now and the tournament getting underway, it’s fantastic that so many top quality players are heading to Shrewsbury.

“It will be a real treat for local tennis fans to see a strong field competing here in Shropshire. “We are delighted that players who have just finished playing in front of worldwide TV audiences in Melbourne at the Australian Open are now going to be playing in Shrewsbury. “The strength of this tournament is reflected by Sabine Lisicki, a past Wimbledon singles finalist, currently being on the qualifying list while there’s so many good players not yet guaranteed a place in the qualifying rounds ahead of the main draw getting under way.”
