Lowry In A ‘Great Position’ For Open Glory

Shane Lowry claims he is in a “great position” to win the Open Championship as he shares the clubhouse lead on eight under par. The 32-year-old Irishman followed up his opening round of four under 67 with a repeat on Friday as he impressively fired five birdies in the first 10 holes of the day, but slipped back with two bogeys at the 14th and 18th.

Lowry shares the lead with American J.B. Holmes and, having finished joint-eighth at May’s US PGA Championship, he is hoping to use the Irish support at Royal Portrush to spur him on to a maiden major title this weekend. He told Sky Sports: “I’m playing well and I feel my game is where I want it to be. I’m in a great position going into the weekend of an Open Championship.

“There’s two long days of golf left, it’s not going to be easy over the next two days. There’s going to be time when I’m going to be under pressure, I’m going to be feeling it and there’s times where I’m going to be out of position. I just have to take it on the chin.

“I’ve done a great job this year of playing one round at a time, trying to shoot the best score I can every day. I shot two 67s in the first two rounds, I’m going to stand on that first tee tomorrow and give it 100% tomorrow afternoon. “Hopefully it ends up in a good score, but if it doesn’t I’ll go out the next day and do the same.”
