Mainz Narrowly Missed Out On Awoniyi’s Deal -Heidel

FSV Mainz sporting director, Christian Heidel has revealed that Liverpool made it difficult for them to sign Super Eagles and Union Berlin forward, Taiwo Awoniyi this summer.

Awoniyi spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Mainz from Liverpool, where he scored one goal in 12 appearances in all competitions.

However, Heidel in an interview with Rheinfalz stated that the Reds failed to give them a discount to sign the Nigerian international.

“I’ve always liked him, as you have seen, rightly,” Heidel said about Awoniyi, as per Rheinfalz.

“He was on the market, but we couldn’t finance the deal.

“We talked about him, but I didn’t get a discount.”

You are not a serious Sporting Director!!!…you are looking for a discount for a likely top striker of the future in the world ?..well , he is showing his class to the world, you have lost out totally!!

Don’t mind them. They always look for discount if it is African players but forgo the discount if it European or South American players.

I will add… if Awoniyi were to be a black South American player from Brazil, Uruguay or Colombia they would have broken their banks to make his signing happen. They are beginning to reckon with Subsaharn black players now since the likes of Weah, Okocha, Eto’o, Drogba and now Osimhen, Iheanacho have shown that the Guinea man (Black Africa) is never in anyway inferior both technically and mentally to anyone from elsewhere!

Up till mid 90s, you could count the number of African born players in all of Europe`’s league… a new dawn have been forced on Europeans by global scrutiny and modern age of the social media! Awoniyi go show them shege for Bundesliga this season… let’s just keep praying he stays healthy and fit!

      • No be small. If he was European or south American you will be willing to pay whatever his club asks for but because he is an African you want discount. Its a good thing your seeing with your eyes what you missed maybe next time you wont make such mistakes.

    • True talk. He didn’t put the money where his mouth is.

  • Mainz 05 that had Taiwo Awoniyi in 2019/20 season and only played him in 12 games all season?

He’s found a home at Union Berlin, no need crying about spilt milk. He’s doing fantastic today at a club that values him.

    Ahead ahead

  • looking for discount? are you okay Ogbeni? dont worry continue to look for rebate and LTA…when you find yourself in relegation zone and you need just a draw to survive at the same time your last match is with union berling…you will tell the story by yourself……now I understood reason awoniyi didn’t celebrate.
