It will interest the Nigerian football faithful to know that Alex Iwobi of Everton is in the 68th position, valued at €73m. Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, valued at €70.1m, is 77th in the list, while Lille forward, Victor Osimhen, takes the 101st spot as he is valued €62.9m by the CIES team.

The CIES Football Observatory has opened a new exciting decade of football analytics with the exclusive publication of its traditional list of the big-5 league players with the greatest estimated transfer values.

The CIES Football Observatory is a research group within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES). Created in 2005 by Dr. Raffaele Poli and Dr. Loïc Ravenel, the CIES Football Observatory currently comprises a staff of four full-time permanent researchers who specialise in the statistical analysis of football.

Issue number 279 of the CIES Weekly Post presents the 166 footballers in the big-5 leagues valued at more than €50 million.

Per position, the most expensive players from a transfer value perspective are Alisson Becker for goalkeepers (€77m), Virgil van Dijk for centre backs (€93 M), Trent Alexander-Arnold for full backs (€110 M), James Maddison for midfielders (€112m) and Kylian Mbappé for forwards (€265m). Eleven out of the 20 big-5 league footballers with an estimated value of at least €100 million play for English Premier League clubs.

There are at least two players worth more than €100m in each of the remaining big-5 leagues: three in the Liga (Messi, Griezmann and Joao Felix), two in the Ligue 1 (Mbappe and Neymar), two in the Serie A (Martínez and Lukaku), as well as two in the Bundesliga (Sancho and Werner).

I’m yet to see a footballer with Mbappe kind of leg shape, that isn’t of a top class. These kinda leg shape is given for football reasons. This leg shape gives balance n good movement on d ball. Something I loved about Owoblow. Great player but came on stage at,should I say wrong time?. Even Nigeria u-17 Akinwumi Amoo is blessed with it.

BTW, the list shows that Tammy Abraham is valued more than Neymar. Hehehehehehe! It also includes a bunch of English players. I counted 7 in the top 20 list shown here. We all know how the English love to hype their own to the highest heavens. Some English players do deserve it, but James Maddison of Leicester? I mean, Maddison is a decent player, for sure. But for him to be in the world’s top twenty suggests heavy English influence in compilation of the list. The Maddison valuation is unrealistic, as I can’t imagine any club that will be willing to shell out that kind of dough for him. Not gonna happen. I also feel Sancho and Tammy Abraham are over valued. However, no eyebrows raised for names like Sterling, Kane and Rashford. And a guy like Alexander Arnold is also worthy of his high valuation. He is one of the best right full backs in the world currently.
Let’s hope in the near future, some Naija ballers will find their way into this exclusive club.

We will surely see some Naija player in the top ten in the near future if Chukwueze, Oshimen continues with their current form till the end of the season and if Kelechi Iheanaho also continues to improve on his current form and be getting involved in Lester games regularly. Those guy will brake records in Europe, I’m sure of that.
