Mendy Facing Late Test

Manchester City will hand a late fitness test to Benjamin Mendy ahead of tonight’s trip to Newcastle United. The France left-back suffered a minor reaction following his comeback from a knee injury in last week’s Carabao Cup win at Burton and was not involved in the FA Cup against Burnley on Saturday.

Mendy is rated as a doubt and City will not take any chances on him unless fully fit.

Elsewhere, captain Vincent Kompany remains on the sidelines with a muscular problem while goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term absentee with an Achilles problem.

Meanwhile, City boss Pep Guardiola has warned that one more slip-up could spell the end of his side’s title defence.

The champions have the chance to cut Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to one point this evening, but anything other than a win will be a big setback. “Whether we play later or earlier, the only chance we have is to win the games. If not it will be almost over,” he said.

“Every game for us is a final, in the cup competitions every game is also a final. What should we do playing first? We have to win. What should we do when playing after? We have to win.”
