    SerioUsly !
    This is somethingg else
    For a guy who never won any trophy or accolade for his national team and yet I’d given a world footballer of the year , I’d say screw this award …..

  • Olusegun. B 5 years ago

    Virgil and Ronaldo were more upbeat for both club and country
    Again no Salah for fifpro best player . I laugh
    Just like last year Salah wasn’t picked fr best player 11.
    This year the same
    Is Mmbapw that upbeat than Salah es when he scored the highest goal scorer agaim in the second season in both league and champions league
    Truly this award is crap !

  • It’s a shame! World football politics,,,players from England can never win Fifa Best Player Award. it’s a shame!

  • Please i ask this question out of ignorance because I’m a bit puzzled by this report. Is this Fifa best player award of Messi the 6th he is winning? I thought it’s his first. I have been under the impression that this award is different from the balon d’or. I know Ronaldo won it twice and Modric had both the Fifa best and the balon d’or. Please Dr Drey and other eminent contributors should educate me, i want my confusion cleared.

      You are absolutely spot on! Messi and C. Ronaldo are both tied on 5 apiece in the Fmr FIFA Balon D’or. In 2016, FIFA and France Football terminated the 2010-2015 joint award and each separately awarded theirs. This is actually Messi’s first ‘ FIFA Best Men’ player of the year award as Ronaldo was the inaugural winner in it’s new format. He did won 2016 and 2017 while Modric carted the 2018 gong.

      I am shocked and bemused to read ” Messi gets one over Ronaldo”

      Its actually the other way round as both are tied on the old ‘Francr Football Balon D’or’/’Fifa Balon D’or, whilst Ronaldo edges him 2-1 in the ‘Fifa Best Men’award accordingly!

  • By the way i was shocked when Messi was announced, i was looking forward to hearing Virgil Van Dyrk’s name to be announced. I wonder how Messi won this above Van Dyrk and Ronald who made more positive contributions for both club and country which should be the criteria.

    I have read so much misunderstanding as it relates to Messi scooping the best prize.
    Although,controversial,we have to see it from FIFA glances.
    I am not an authority as it relates to this award system but I think it is vital we look at the below points before we make our assertions;

    1. The Fifa award is totally different from the ballon d’or.
    Yes.there was a merger between both in recent years,but such merger was suspended.and both went their separate ways.
    2. It must be noted that the ballon d’or is basically owned by the French magazine and tend to focus more on players plying their trade within Europe at that given year which the season ran;and as such the award is up for grabs for such.
    The Fifa award,as the name states,is ran by Fifa and is for the whole world;and such award is given within the year being looked into.
    3. The voting system is different for both ballon d’or and Fifa. Fifa award is basically ran by the votes of different coaches and captains of every national team.

    So with the above points,it would be noted that;
    A. Although Van dijk did well for his club,liverpool winning the champions league;in the year in question his country,Netherlands didn’t really win anything,although they got to the final of the Uefa nations league losing to Ronaldo’s portugal.
    Which brings me to Ronaldo. He won the scudetto and the UEFA nations league.
    Messi just the la liga and didn’t do much with argentina.but he was the top scorer in both la liga and the champions league.

    From all these, if there is any bias,it is against Ronaldo. Since he had two cups to Van dijk and Messi’s one.

    To conclude,i think this year Fifa award is flawed,due to the fact that most captains and coaches voted based on their emotions,they mainly picked who they like as a player,given there wasn’t much to work with..

    That’s just my own thought
