Meulensteen: Ighalo Has Done Well But Man United Need Striker Like Lewandowski

Former assistant coach to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United Rene Meulensteen says Odion Ighalo has done well at Old Trafford but the club still need a striker like Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Ighalo has been impressive since his loan switch to United from Shanghai Shenhua.

The former Super Eagles striker has scored five goals in 11 outings in all competitions for United.

He was  on target in United’s 2-1 win against Norwich City in the quarter-final of the FA Cup on Saturday.

But Meulensteen, who assisted Ferguson in winning the Premier League title in 2009, 2011 and 2013, feels the club need an out and out striker like Lewandowski.

The former Fulham manager also said  the duo of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial can not take up the role of a striker at the club.

“First thing you talked about going out and spend on a big striker,” the 56-year-old said on talkSPORT.

“They brought Ighalo in obviously as a sought of a player that could help in certain times and he has done very very well. But if you look to the other players that have been there (Marcus) Rashford (Anthony)  Martial, they are not really out and out strikers. (Mason) Greenwood, young player coming up, same thing there.

So there is a lot of chances and goals that can be created from wide areas,(Jadon) Sancho is the same player.

“What I think Manchester United is missing is a sought of the player of the calibre of Lewandowski.

“Somebody that is up there, can hold the line, can link play. But when it  comes to finishing play, chances in and outside the box, that is the sought of player and they are hard to come by.”

United are currently sixth on 49 points, five points away from Chelsea who occupy fourth spot.

They will hope to reduce the gap between them and the Blues  when they visit Brighton and Hove Albion today (Tuesday).

Lineka even had to ask Shearer that question, as in “what’ve you got say about this Ighalo guy?. Lolz. Fly high Ighalo fly high high n higher Ighalogoal, there ain’t no one stopping you. God’s blessed you already.
