Newcastle Eyeing Deal For Championship Star

Newcastle are reportedly hoping to beat Aston Villa to the signature of Brentford defender Yoann Barbet next summer.

Rafael Benitez has been very vocal about a lack of financial backing from owner Mike Ashley during his time at St James’ Park, however, the January transfer window suggested things may be moving in a more positive direction.

Newcastle paid out a club-record fee for playmaker Miguel Almiron and Benitez will be hoping for further support at the end of the campaign.

But Benitez is yet to get any assurances from Ashley and has been monitoring Barbet, who will be available for free over the summer.

The 25-year-old boasts over 100 appearances for the Bees, having joined in 2015, and he has turned out 31 times in the second-tier this season.

Barbet is yet to agree on a new deal and interest from Newcastle could see him reject any offers from Brentford.

It’s understood that Aston Villa are also keen on the versatile Frenchman.
