The Nigeria Football Federation, Africa’s football governing body CAF and Everton football club have sent birthday greetings to Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi, who turns 24 on Sunday, Completesports.com reports.

“Happy birthday @NGSuperEagles midfielder, @alexiwobi. Have a good one,” the NFF wrote on their verified Twitter handle.

Iwobi was born in Lagos before moving to England at the age of four, following a brief stay in Turkey, and grew up in
Newham , London.

He joined Arsenal while still at primary school,  in 2004, and was nearly released by the club at the age of 14 and again at the age of 16.

He was first involved in a first-team match as an unused substitute in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion on 25 September 2013 and went on to sign a long-term contract with Arsenal in October 2015.

On 27 October 2015, Iwobi made his first-team debut for Arsenal, starting in a 3–0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Round of 16 of the League Cup.

He made his Premier League debut four days later in a 3–0 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, as a stoppage time substitute for Mesut Özil.

After winning the FA Cup and Community Shield at Arsenal, on 8 August 2019, Iwobi signed a five-year contract with Everton.

And according to the BBC, Arsenal received a fee of an initial £28 million, rising to £34 million with potential add-ons.

He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles on 8 October 2015, replacing Ahmed Musa in the 57th minute of a 2–0 friendly defeat to DR Congo in Visé , Belgium.

He was named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and featured in all three games as the Eagles were knocked out in the group stage.

Also, he was part of the Eagles squad to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt where they finished third.

Happy Birthday bro.wishing you a glorious career and fulfilled life.

  • What is there not to like about Alex Iwobi in Nigeria colours?

The affable young man always wears his badge on his sleeves with performances never short of passion, patriotism and positivity.

He is slowly but surely becoming a senior member of the national team even at the age of 24. And, what other type of player would you like to be a senior member other than the level headed Iwobi.

I remember Iwobi scoring against England with a smashing volley in 2018 and the rousing the Super Eagles fans with his hand gesture saying “come on, we are still in this match!” My head swelled at the goal and his rallying cry.

Coming on to score against Zambia in the World Cup qualifier in Uyo and then looking like,’did you ever doubt me!’ Truly, Iwobi’s actions always speak louder than words.

He rarely disappoints in Super Eagles colours: if he is not scoring, he is assisting and when not doing either, he is full of running.

That sort of passion was missing in the Super Eagles at a point however Iwobi has now come to embody everything that hard work, dedication and application stand for in the national team.

Forever the consummate professional, happy birthday and many happy returns to Alex ‘the great’ Iwobi.
