The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the recent poor performances of the country’s national teams in international competitions, with particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Ten-time African champions and holders of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, the Super Falcons were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the ongoing competition in Morocco.
Their hopes of remaining in contention for a place at the World Cup were subsequently dashed following a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in a playoff for a ticket to the Inter-Confederation Playoffs scheduled for later this year.
The result means Nigeria, long regarded as the dominant force in African women’s football, will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.
The Super Falcons had featured at every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991, but will now be absent from the 2027 finals in Brazil.

The Flying Eagles have also endured disappointment on the continental stage, failing to qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Championship.
Former NFF General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, will chair the fact-finding committee.
Other members are former Nigeria U-20 head coach and President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Ladan Bosso; former Super Falcons captain, multiple Women’s WAFCON winner and FIFA Women’s World Cup star Desire Oparanozie; former Super Eagles captain, AFCON winner and FIFA World Cup star Mutiu Adepoju; and former FIFA referee Dr Alex Mana.
Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Mallam Mohammed Nasiru Sa’idu, will serve as secretary of the committee.

The history of the World Cup, Wafcon and even Afcon winners showed that Indigenous Coaches have won the titles in more than 90% of the time- Brazil won the World Cup 5 times with their National Coaches- they tried a “foreign European, Italian Ancelloti” this year out of desperation- and Brazil could not get beyond Rd of 16 in the just concluded 2026 World Cup, won by Spain with a Spanish Coach. Italy, Germany, all won their 4 World Cup titles with their native Coaches. Egypt men’s national team has the African record of winning Afcon 7 whooping times, and they have always done so with native Egyptian Coaches; Senegal has won it twice, and both with native Senegalese Coaches; A white Coach nearly caused Ivory Coast from qualifying from their group stage, but for luck of getting through as 3rd best-placed team. The white man was rightly sacked and a native Ivorian who was impromptuly handed the Coaching role from the Rd of 16 Knockout stage, and went all the way to win the Afcon trophy beating Nigeria, who had earlier beaten them in the group stage, at the 2023 Afcon final match.
So even if Coach Madugu goes- jump or pushed NFF should look for a Solid Nigerian or African-foreign born national to handle the Super Falcons.

Malawi women coach, Lovemore Fazili is a CAF license coach and was coaching the Strikers women’s club of Malawi before the FA drafted him to Malawi Scorchers (women national team) and he immediately won the COSAFA cup in 2023. The Cameroonian lady coach (Valentine Nguele) of the Lionesses is also CAF A licensed and was coaching a local football club in Cameroon before she was drafted to take over the Lionesses, following non qualification for Wafcon 2026 and persistent failure by long term standing Coach Jean Baptiste. So I don’t know which Wafcon 2026 matches you watched that Mr Lovemore Fazili, and Ms Valentine Nguele were not in the dugout for their respective teams from the group matches to the final, which they both are now.

Fixing a nation’s systemic football problems requires elite tactical managers who excel in structural discipline…Sometimes too,average foreign coaches still do much better job than our express yourself local managers system of old.No tactical skills and poor knowledge of modern football coaching …
To solve this problem, first we need competent FA..Then foreign managers for our Super falcons and under 20 male teams respectively.
Appointment of coaches should be done early so that the manager will have ample time settle down and put a strong team together prior to qualification playoffs…
