Nigerian Forward Scores To Help Boost St. Pauli’s Bundesliga Promotion Hopes

Nigerian forward, Oladapo Afolayan, was on target for St. Pauli who defeated Hannover 2-1 away in Sunday’s Bundesliga 2 (German second Division) game, Completesport.com reports.

Afolayan scored in the 41st minute to put St. Pauli 1-0 ahead before he was replaced on 77th minute.

It is the 26-year-old’s seventh goal with two assists in 27 appearances in the lower division.

He has now scored eight goals in 30 games in all competitions this season.

For St. Pauli, it is a return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats prior to Sunday’s game.

St. Pauli are in second place on 60 points after 30 league matches with four games left to play.

They are just one point behind league leaders Holstein Kiel while in third place is Fortuna Dusseldorf on 55 points.

The first and second placed teams will automatically gain promotion to the Bundesliga while the third placed side will be involved in a promotion play-offs.

Born in England, Afolayan spent his youth at a multitude of clubs: Harrow St Marys, Chelsea, Toronto FC, Barnet, Tooting & Mitcham United and Toronto Varsity Blues.

He left the Chelsea academy in order to concentrate on his GCSEs and moved to Canada with his family but returned to England to study civil engineering at Loughborough University.

On 1 February 2018, Afolayan signed a three-and-a-half year contract with West Ham United.

Then on 31 January 2019, he joined League Two side Oldham Athletic on loan until the end of the 2018–19 season.

On January 2023, he left English Championship club Bolton Wanderers for St. Pauli.

In April 2021, Afolayan, who played for England’s C team in 2017, was asked in the Bolton Wanderers matchday programme if he would consider playing for Nigeria and he stated: “Yeah I would. It’s something I’ve thought about and hopefully I can keep playing well and get on their radar.”
