NPL Playoffs: I Feel Disappointed —Rivers United Coach Eguma Laments After Losing League Title

Stanley Eguma has expressed his disappointment after Rivers United relinquished their league at the NPL Super Six playoffs on the final day against Enyimba.

A 1-1 draw against the Peoples Elephant on match-day five on Sunday saw Rivers United fail to defend their title and also finish third in the six-team table.

It is Enyimba’s ninth league title and first under former Super Eagles star Finidi George.

Ekene Awazie gave Enyimba the lead on 39 minutes before Nyima Nwagua equalised for Rivers on 48 minutes.

But it was not enough as Rivers finished third and will now play in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Commenting after his team lost the title, Eguma said:”I feel disappointed we fought gallantly but we failed to defend our title.

“We came late to the game we had a lot of chances which we would have scored to gone ahead but unfortunately we couldn’t convert our chances.

He thanked the organisers of the NPL Super Six playoffs and clamoured that more games should be on television.

“It’s very obvious Nigeria football has come to stay and has met a standard in the world. I think it’s time people start recognising our effort we are putting in the league and that’s why we are clamouring that the league should be on television so that the whole world would see it and attract a lot of people which will help the league to grow.“

In the final NPL Super Six playoffs, Enyimba topped, Remo came second, Rivers United occupied third, in fourth place was Sunshine while Bendel Insurance and Lobi were fifth and sixth respectively.
