Ofili, Nwokocha Still On Course For Historic Sprint Double At NCAA

Sprinters Favour Ofili and Grace Nwokocha are on the cusp of history after they both qualified for the finals of the 100m and 200m at the ongoing 2022 NCAA outdoor championship holding in Eugene, Oregon.

No Nigerian woman has successfully completed a sprint double in the history of the championship and one of the two Nigerians who are in the finals of the two events scheduled for Saturday may make that history.

Ofili, the 19 year old, Louisiana State University undergraduate student looks the favourite to achieve that after not only running 10.93s twice in the 100m and setting a Nigerian record (21.96s) in the 200m but also by the fact that she lorded it over her fiercest rival, Aby Steiner in the NCAA regionals.

Nwokocha, the Tokyo Olympics 100/200m semifinalist has also firmly put herself as one of the candidates to reckoning with after blasting 10.97s in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian, Rosemary Chukwuma will also be competing in the 100m final to set up a titanic battle with her compatriots.

Chukwuma finally ran a wind legal 10.99s to join the sub-11 seconds club and Eugene, Oregon offers Nigerians the chance to see if one of the athletes can join Blessing Okagbare as the only athletes to legally run inside 10.90 in the event.

Favor Ofili will go down to be the greatest Nigerian Athlete and possibly African alongside Christine Mbaoma. I pray for Grace as she goes into the finals to do the double.
