Onuachu Ruled Out Of AFCON 2021

Genk striker Paul Onuachu has been ruled out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in another major blow to Nigeria’s chances of making a huge impact at the competition.

Onuachu picked up a hamstring injury in Genk’s 1-1 home draw against Royal Antwerp on Sunday.

The former FC Midtylland star had opened scoring for Genk in the first half before the injury.

The 27-year-old was replaced by Ike Ugbo 20 minutes from time after picking up the injury.

The fResd orward is now expected to spend around a month on the sidelines as a result of the setback.

Watford midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has already been ruled out of the AFCON finals in Cameroon and there are still doubts over Victor Osimhen’s participation.

Interim head coach Austine Eguavoen is expected to release his provisional list for the competition this week.

The Super Eagles will begin their campaign in Cameroon against the Phraohs of Egypt on January 11.

This is a huge blow o, even tho Onuachu rarely shines with the Eagles, but he’s in good form…I suggest we replace him with Dessers…..we are so so lucky to be spoilt with strikers…them plenty and them they score.

Too bad the Nigerian Head Coach is going to missing his key players. Take heart Onuachu while wishing you recover soon.

  • Chigo Ekeji 2 years ago

Rest well Onuachu, take time to heal up and don’t rush it.

  • No shaking.

    I wish him quick recovery.

For us to do great in coming afcon we must have positive mindset.

No blow to the team. Super eagles will go to afcon and win the cup.

We still have good strikers that can do the it.

    God bless Nigeria.

    • U see why Dennis and Awoniyi should have been blended into the squad a long time ago?……Now we are gradually falling back to those rejected stones we cast away…… International caps should be spread wide as much as possible to enable every player have a feel of the action…… You never can say when you will be needing your so called fringe players hence they must all be battle tested and ready.

  • Henry Farle 2 years ago

It is difficult for us to see our own bad news mostly when the csn is not biased. Recover from your injuries, Onuachu.

  • Onuachu will miss Afcon no doubt, I pity Coach Eguavoen who barely has time to prepare but will now contend with losing his key players. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • We are lucky This is a position SE is well stocked…….Another reason game time should been spread out to enable as many players as possible taste action and have playing experience…….If you restrict playing time to a tiny part of your squad and injury strikes the main team players,it will be difficult for the fringe players to rise up to the occasion because they don’t have game experience……. Awoniyi should have had more than 8 SE caps by now but at last I see us relying on him in this Afcon even with just 1 SE cap to his name…….Every player is important but when you talk they will ask you who he will bench……they will tell you not all players doing well in club should be invited……..they will tell you about team cohesion and trusted players…….SMH

Even though am not happy Paul Onuachu is injured, I don’t see him as an important player to the Super Eagles. He has never wowed me with any of his performance since he started featuring for the team.

If Victor Osihmen fails to make the Nations Cup squad, I will never be worried cos of the avalanche of options we have in the striking department. Cyriel Dressers, Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis Bonaventure are all available to step into his shoes.

When I read somewhere CSN is biased, I was like why? Onuachu would need at least a month to recover. Wish you well, your fan.

  • Get well soon onuachu.
This gives others a chance to step in and fight for a shirt in the attack of the team.
I see Dennis definitely getting a call up now. The question is will other players who have been doing well for their calls also be called up.

Draft in Sadiq Umar OR Cyriel Dessers sharply pls Eguavoen!

  • ZiAha 2 years ago

Just as we are thinking Oshimen could make it, Onuachu completely ruled out. CSN is biased.

  • TALK UR OWN 2 years ago

    QUICK RECOVERY ONUACHU.
BUY THERE IS NO CAUSE FOR ALARM, WE HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH.CYRIEL DESSERS IS AVAILABLE

    • Honestly, I’m sensing Eguavoen doesn’t have interest in Dessers o. I just hope I’m wrong. If we lose him to Belgium, I won’t forgive everyone involved.

That these fringe players have not been blooded in all these time, is no thanks to the former coach.

  • LET US FAIL WITH OUR OWN 2 years ago

Personally I feel this our mottor “Let us fail with our own”(LFWOO) might come true if we don’t go to the Afcon with Osimehn who has been tested and trusted already and Onuachu who is or has blended into the system.(3 goals already). With all due respect, it is better to bank on them than those rookies

Ouachu has always been a bench warmer. Oshimen, we know him for 90minutes. Desser should be invited to take the place of Onuachu on the bench.

      SE 1st 11:

      Okoye

      Ekong, Balogun, Aina, Collins, Awaziem

      V Moses, Amoo, Iwobi

      Odion, Osimhen or Desser

      SUPER EAGLES’ BENCH
      UZOHO
      AMPEYI
      Nwakali
      SANUSI
      ARIBO
      Ebuehi
      NDIDI,
      DENNIS
      SMOSES
      Lookman
      Iheanacho

    • Aghanhowa was a rookie at 2000 afcon. Owen once shined as a rookie in a world cup. Awoniyi Umar dessers Dennis are not rookies. They have all played in Europe severally. You called that rookies!

How has onuachu performed in SE shirt. I wish him speedy recovery.

      LUFWOO,
Honestly, your name wins the award for funniest name in the forum, in my opinion. Anytime I see it, na so so laugh I dey laugh.
There is no excuse ooo. Wish Onuachu a speedy recovery. In his absence, we still have Dessers, Sadiq, Dennis, Awoniyi, and Ighalo. Enough fire power for our Afcon campaign.
      Let us succeed, period!

  • Bernard Ekele 2 years ago

Friday, the only argument is, Ndidi should start ahead of Amoo because of experience.

    • Is Amoo a DMF? I don’t think so.

      • Olusegun.B. 2 years ago

Akinwunmi Amoo is a midfielder who can play the number 10 role very well. Has also been placed as a right winger , left winger , supporting striker but never a Defensive midfielder. He supposed to be in this team and combine effectively with Joe Aribo esp when it comes to the creative side of the midfield . Him and Nnwakali. I am not impressed with Alex Iwobi at all. If not for the politics that is going on .

    • Olusegun.B. 2 years ago

      Ndidi
      Onyeka
      Michael (Bologna)

These are the super Eagles defensive midfielders

      Attacking midfielders

      Joe Aribo
      Akinwunmi Amoo
      Kelechi Nnwakali
      Etebo
As much as I don’t want to add him but Alex Iwobi is one of them

  • Igbekun Abo 2 years ago

No shaking Onuachu, you will bounce back from this injury setback stronger. We are always praying for you and all deserving Super Eagles player

  • I wonder why everyone is not talking about sodiq Umar. Honestly I see him as the closes to oshimen in terms of impact for eagles at afcon.

    Oshimen
    Sodiq Umar
    Dennis
    Awoniyi
    Dessers

Dessers in last position because he is new to Nigerian and African football.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

@Christain ministries Nigeria I think what @LET US FAIL WITH OUR OWN means there is being a rookie with the national team not like in Europe par say. Osimehn currently has 18 appearance and 10 goals for SE. Onuachu has 15 with 3 goals already. Denis has 2 senior team appearance with no goal while dessers has 1(25minutes) zero goal. So they are like new to the national team setup compared to already trusted and trusted.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

*Tested* That’s what I think he means though. Don’t know if am right. So it’s not my opinion par say.. Thanks.

  • LET US FAIL WITH OUR OWN 2 years ago

Thanks Monkey post. You said my mind already. Don’t know what to add

  • @Friday, Amoo should be introduced in 2nd half. It’s better we start Ndidi for experience.

  • pompei 2 years ago

I hope Osimhen will be able to play at the Afcon.
However, I will leave out Osimhen for now, until we are assured of his health. I would hate for Osimhen to go to Afcon and get injured again. That would be PENNY WISE, POUNDS FOOLISH. Better for him to miss out on the Afcon, and have him fully ready for the world cup playoffs.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

@Pompei I thought my name was the funniest??? Lol…

    • pompei 2 years ago

Loool, MONKEY POST na normal name na. All of us played monkey post as kids.

  • Raphael 2 years ago

Friday, does that mean Sanusi and Nwakali would take the places of Chuzzy and Ejuke because they are not on the bench.

  • Feliz 2 years ago

After Osimen, Desers, then Sadiq ummah
