Super Eagles and Rivers United goalkeeper, Ani Ozoemena, has returned to full training after undergoing career-threatening surgery earlier this year, the club has confirmed.
The surgery was fully funded by the hierarchy of the Pride of Rivers,— a clear sign of the Port Harcourt club’s genuine commitment to player welfare.
The club revealed that the cost of the surgery, estimated at about ₦14 million, as well as the entire rehabilitation programme. Ozoemena did not have to worry about any medical bills.
“This is part of the club’s wider player-first approach,”Rivers United said in a statement on Friday.
In March 2026, Rivers United publicly highlighted its “colossal commitment to player welfare,” pointing to Ozoemena’s case as one example of taking full responsibility for players’ health and recovery.

The same support earlier helped right-back Ebuka Akobundu return to action after being sidelined for 378 days with an abdominal injury.
“By removing the financial and medical burden, the club allows players to concentrate fully on their recovery and performance. That approach has helped lift squad morale and strengthen team unity.”
Ozoemena’s return to full training is a major step forward. ACL recoveries usually take several months of careful rehabilitation, and his progress shows both successful surgery and the dedicated aftercare the club provided.
With Rivers United still in the thick of the NPFL season, having their goalkeeper back in full training is a welcome boost for the technical crew and the entire squad.
