Segun Solanke has emphasized the need for a proactive, strategic, and inclusive approach to Nigeria’s Olympic preparation.
Solanke, who is the President and Founder of Provazios Sports Academy made the plea in the wake of Nigeria’s dismal showing at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Nigeria failed to win a medal at the games with top athletes like Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Favour Ofili, Blessing Oborodudu and Odunayo Adekuroye failing to fulfill expectations.
Since Nigeria started participating at the Olympics (Helsinki 1952), this is the 8th edition the country would finish the Games, without a podium placement in any sport.
Nigeria went to Paris 2024 with 88 athletes, and took part in 12 sporting events.
Solanke highlighted the country’s past failures, citing inadequate preparation, lack of infrastructure, insufficient funding, and poor athlete welfare as major contributing factors.
To achieve Olympic success, Solanke recommends the following steps:

“World-Class Infrastructure: Invest in state-of-the-art training facilities across the country, ensuring equal opportunities for talent development.
“Athlete Development and Welfare: Prioritize athlete development and welfare, providing access to top coaches, nutritionists, and sports psychologists, as well as a comprehensive welfare program.
“Continuous Monitoring and Feedback:Establish a system for regular monitoring and evaluation of athletes’ progress, with quarterly reviews and necessary adjustments.
“International Exposure:* Support athletes’ participation in global tournaments to build experience and confidence.
“Public and Private Sector Collaboration:* Foster partnerships with private companies to sponsor athletes, invest in infrastructure, and support sports development programs.”
He further stressed on the importance of learning from these mistakes and adopting a new approach that prioritizes long-term planning, investment, and collaboration.
Solanke urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate leadership step and convene a meeting with sports federations and top athletes to develop a clear roadmap for future success.
