Nigeria’s Super Falcons have crashed out in the group stage of the Paris Olympic football event after losing 3-1 to Japan on Wednesday.
The Falcons needed an outright win to stand a chance of progressing into the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
But first half goals from Maika Hamano, Mina Tanaka and Hikaru Kitagawa ended the hopes of the Randy Waldrum-led team.
Jennifer Echegini got the Falcons’ only goal in the tournament.
Japan took the lead on 22 minutes after Hamano got to the end of a square ball, tucking in the pass.
Japan extended their lead 10 minutes later thanks to Tanaka who followed through a rebound off the bar.
In the 42nd minute Echegini pulled a goal back for the Falcons with a well taken left-foot shot.
The Japanese restored their two-goal lead five minutes into first half added time Japan got their third goal through Kitagawa.
In the group’s other game Spain defeated Brazil 2-0 to record their third win in the group.
After the conclusion of the group stage Spain finished top on nine points, Japan placed second on six points, Brazil was third on three points while the Falcons ended bottom with no point.

Dr egungu how does it feel to qualify and coming back home with 10defence and 1 goalie??? I hope you have a better explanation because the girls are good but the coach still plays them out of position and doesn’t seem to have a game plan to score. You can blame it on anything but we saw how the Zambians girls are carving out chances and scoring goals even though their let down is also noticed by conceding. No one should come and say they missed a couple of chances because in football people miss chances and our opponents also missed chances but managed to create more and score a couple.
@Incompetent NFF should let Magudu be on interim and see how he performs. Waldrum has done well and I wish him well because he has had opportunities at WAFCON where he lost to African coaches and also international stage where he also didn’t win a spoon but played pack the bus till we always get bouted out. WAFCON that our local coaches had won on multiple occasions with ease is now impossible so I wonder what business he will be coming around to do again.
