Paris Olympics: Ex-Arsenal Striker To Captain France

Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette will captain France’s men’s national team in the football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic games.

According to EuroFoot, Lacazette was handed the captain’s armband by the team’s coach and France legend Thierry Henry.

“Thierry Henry offered me the role of captain, and I accepted with pleasure,” Lacazette was quoted on Wednesday on EuroFoot.

Hosts France are in Group A alongside United States of America, Guinea and New Zealand.

The French will open their campaign on July 24 against the United States before facing Guinea on July 27.

On July 30, they will take on New Zealand in their final group game.

Lacazette would hope to lead France to a first Olympic football gold since Los Angeles 1984.

At the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, France had a disappointing campaign as they crashed out in the group stage.

Meanwhile, Brazil who won the football gold medals at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 did not qualify for the Paris Olympics.
