Paris Saint-Germain To Be Crowned Ligue 1 Champions

Paris Saint-Germain are poised to be crowned champions of Ligue 1 – after the French government ruled the season had to end.

It was confirmed this week that French football will not complete its 2019-20 season, and a meeting was held on Thursday morning to formally end the campaign.

And L’Équipe report the current standings will be final based on points per game, crowning Paris Saint-Germain as champions.

Before the shutdown they were 12 points clear of Marseille and also had a game in hand to play.

The decision could have a knock-on effect for the Scottish Premiership where Celtic hold a 13-point lead over Rangers having played one game more.

An SPFL resolution means that the top flight season can be declared over based on points per game, which would make Neil Lennon’s side champions.

That would have to be approved by UEFA, but they have indicated that they will accept seasons ending early if mandated by government.

If the Scottish Government decrees that the Premiership cannot resume, – they’ve already set a June 10 date at the earliest for resumption of sp0rt – it would pave the way for the SPFL to follow the French lead.
