Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has set a new record after the side’s empathic 10-0 win against Sao Tome and Principe in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Monday, reports Completesports.com.
Peseiro is now the first Super Eagles coach to lead the team to their biggest ever scoreline.
The Super Eagles’ biggest scoreline before now was a 10-1 win against the Squirrels of Benin Republic in 1959 at the Kwame Nkrumah Cup.
Napoli forward Victor Osimhen set the tone for the victory after putting the Super Eagles ahead on nine minutes.

One thing I like about our new coach is his ability to read match and know what to do next.
Since his resumption, his second half has always been better that the first half.
God bless Nigeria
Musa and Shehu coming in at the same time just seems weird when we could have used that to cap tie Dessers but atleast the result was gotten. We will continue to watch proceedings. If Musa decides to still be greedy he will be disgraced and please don’t tell me about his performance today….The opposition wasn’t strong…I will like to see him against a stronger opposition. This is a rebuilding process and he should give way….Trying to accumulate as much caps as possible. A record which will still be broken by Ndidi, Iwobi, or Osimhen as they have real youth on their side not some 35 year old man saying he is 28..I appreciate what he has done in the past for Nigeria but now he is tainting his image.
He provided two assist did he not?
Why are you guys always Keen to force Musa out of National team,? is he not a Nigerian,? you guys are purely tribalistic and it’s unfair, He has served the country diligently and deserves some respect, He still came on and had 2 lovely assists, what do you guys want again. Musa remains a Legend and we should allow him to retire from the SE honorably and voluntarily.
Free musa.. he did not invite himself rather the coaches saw the need to invite him.. if you must blame anyone, blame the coach..
I sense more records being broken when this coach settles down….For now he does not know the players well and he is still relying on his Nigerian assistants for guidance hence the invitation of certain players…..this coach is not a coach that is afraid to make changes and he is willing to take risks…..There will be an overhaul especially in the central defence and wing position just watch……I wish SE all the best in the future.
Lol…you guys should continue with that Musa’s news everywhere. Typical us! you would leave real problems and focus on something else…wtf. I’ve said it before and i will say it again…If you are one of those that sees Musa’s presence in the team as a problem, then you are most probably tribalistic….YES! Do we have uncapped players, who can do better than Musa right now? Most probably. But, are those players our problem right now? Absolutely NOT! Again! Musa’s presence in the team is not super eagle’s current problem. Not even close….
Nobody is saying Musa is the problem……so also nobody is saying an old and sick tinubu is the problem……all we are saying is that we need fresh air……we need to try new ideas and give the new generation a chance to do something new…… Nobody called anybody a problem…….Musa is not the only northern footballer in Nigeria or SE so I wonder where you get this your tribal conclusion from…….There are many young and talented northern footballers that we are also rooting for so please stop this your tribal card…….Even presently we have Zaidu Sodiq in the national team and nobody is complaining about them…… Nigeria’s problem has always being the old refusing to leave the stage for new ideas and Musa is a clear example of what Nigeria is.
But Musa is not 40 na?? He’s still only 29 he can still had value to the team as the captain. Who are the old ones that should leave the stage for the young ones?? The team in general is still a young team with majority of the players in their mid twenties. Why are people not calling for Balogun who is 33 to retire why Musa?? Make una free Musa abeg he’s still relevant for the SuperEagles as long he’s fit.
In my comment I specified central defence and wing……Ekong and balogun can not give us that cover any longer…..Thank God Bassey is coming up,even Ozowanfo had a very excellent season in Belgium playing in center back……Idah too is a good central defender who just needs to move to a more standard league in Europe…….Then we have that defender in isreal who also needs to move to a more competitive league before we start clamouring for his inclusion…….But Musa and ighalo’s wing is loaded with talented and ready top level players that is what makes their case more troubling especially Musa…….Musa has tried and he is still relevant so also is Mikel and Victor Moses but it’s time to give others the chance to try……..Ademola lookman, Samuel kalu, Samuel chukwueze,Moses Simon, Emmanuel Dennis, are already available in that wide area while Olise, Malcolm ebowei,Tosin kehinde,Paul Mukairu, are still in the sidelines looking for a way in…….we need new ideas that’s all……let others too gather international caps and promote their career too….haba
I have no issues with Musa but he is clearly not 29. Just because he has a slight frame doesn’t mean he is the age he claims to be. And may i also fault your comparison with Balogun. He was born in a society that records are there in the public domain to verify people’s ages. Even at an older age of 33, who looks younger and still got springs in their legs? I’m not a big fan of Balogun as i believe he’s got limited football skills but just not right to ascribe what is not to him, end of.
The Super Eagles were superb 8/10 to all the starters except Osimhen, he scores 9/10. The supply to the forwards was unlimited from the wings and midfield. And Moses Simon for once provided a beautiful cross from the left as an assist for the first goal. Aina provided a lob from the right to assist the 2nd goal, Lookman also provided a beautiful cross from the right for the 4th goal.
Zanusi and Aina made frequent raiding runs into the opposition’s half, Nigeria scored from a setpiece freekick, Iwobi and Etebo provided so many through balls it was like Christmas, and Dennis in the dying minutes displayed cunning gamesmanship when he tempted a defender into making a penalty winning tackle.
The SE left flank and right contributed to the victory. Even Musa came on for his Cameo role, this time doubling his presence on the pitch from 15mins to 30mins, and he was responsible for both an assist and participation in a sequence of play leading to a goal.
The players showed true professionalism in despatching Sao Tome so ruthlessly.
However, there is just one area I want to address. I feel the Super Eagles attack through the middle would easily be snuffed out by a better side. It requires more sophistication through a pattern or rule of play.
Players in stationary positions in the opposition half during an attack should only be allowed one touch on the ball in order to pass to a moving player.
This rule would embed positive ball progression, and improve attacking intensity while accelerating the pace of attack.
In short, if you’re standing during an attack you cannot slow the attack and are allowed only one touch. Advancing players are afforded as many touches as possible.
I like way we play to am so happy for tham good one guy
Gwad! By the time we have an Amoo at center it means Eagles could go on scoring 20 zero and Victor Osime should gave 8 of those foals, chai. Goodluck Peseiro.

** What Made Nigeria’s Win All the More Impressive **
Peseiro’s Nigeria made light work of São Tomé and Príncipe in thrilling style with 10 unrequited goals in this week’s 2023 Afcon qualifiers fixture.
This was an extraordinary performance by the Super Eagles who were not in a charitable mood throughout the encounter.
Against very lowly opposition, Nigeria have sometimes flattered to deceive their way into unimpressive victories. And sometimes they have actually been defeated; last year’s face-palm home loss to Central Africa Republic readily comes to mind.
It is easy to dismiss São Tomé and Príncipe as a team Nigeria should be spanking 10:0 but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
In March last year, noisy neighbours Ghana needed 1 dubious penalty and 2 goals to limp to a 3:1 win against this same São Tomé and Príncipe in their Afcon 2022 second leg qualifier. In the first leg – similar to this one in which Nigeria executed as if scoring goals was going out of fashion – Ghana only managed a meagre 1:0 victory. And guess what, it was achieved by another questionable penalty kick in the second half.
Even South Africa huffed and puffed to eventually overcome São Tomé and Príncipe 4:2 in 2020.
So, they might be pushovers, but not pushovers to the extent in which the Super Eagles’ ridiculous scoreline suggested today.
Simply put, Peseiro’s Super Eagles were excellent. Yes, there were certain aspects of their performance that require constructive criticisms, but overall, it was a 5 out of 5 performance due to the ludicrous and record setting margin of victory.
In this day and age, it is near difficult to find a 10:0 scoreline even in women’s football, such was the ruthlessness of Nigeria’s performance.
With the cloud of 2022 World Cup qualification failure still still hanging over the Super Eagles, any positive results (however impressive) will continue to be met with measured and tempered celebrations. After Qatar 2022, that situation should psychologically improve.
It was an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable match to watch, not just because of the scoreline, not just because of the calibre of the opposition but because of the way the Super Eagles set up and set about dismantling their opponents in brilliant fashion and with ruthless efficiency.
And the attention-grabbing scoreline is a testament to this.
In the match, Peseiro set up in his now familiar 4-4-2 formation but this time with an interesting twist. Because he knew São Tomé and Príncipe were not a strong side, Zaidu pushed higher up the pitch which made the formation look like 3-5-2 at times (his plan B formation) .
Hence, for Nigeria’s first goal, Bassey passed to Iwobi who located Zaidu (in far left midfield) who slipped in Simon before the Nantes man delivered a Sony PlayStation cross for Osimhen’s picture-perfect header.
Sometimes, both fullbacks would overlap at the same time leaving Ajayi and Bassey at the back with protection from Etebo. In this situation, the midfield and forward were flooded with bodies leading to Nigeria’s deluge of goals.
Peseiro went for the jugular in this match and it paid off for him big time as he struck gold with goals. São Tomé and Príncipe do not win a lot of matches but, in the same token you have to go all the way back to 1976 for they conceded a similar number of goals in a game.
So, though it was against a lowly opposition, the ruthless nature of this 10:0 is homeric and nothing short of spectacular to which the Super Eagles have to be rightly applauded.
