Qatar 2022: Okocha Reveals Factors Behind Morocco’s Impressive Performance

Nigeria legend, Austin Okocha has highlighted the key factors in Morocco’s impressive run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions made history as the first African country to reach the semi-finals in the tournament’s history following the 1-0 victory against Portugal on Saturday.

Walid Regragui’s side are unbeaten in the competition and have conceded just once.

“When you love playing for your nation there’s no limit to what you can achieve and these [Moroccan] guys put in everything and got their reward,” Okocha told SuperSport.

“That’s the beauty of the game. You stand a chance if you get it right. Forget about stars, forget about what you have achieved before. What counts is the game in front of you and they have shown that if you get it right, you are capable of beating anybody.

“They have team spirit. They haven’t got superstars like Ronaldo or Messi in their squad but what they got is unity. What they have got is bringing out the best from each other. They challenge each other on being your brother’s keeper, bringing out the best in each other.”

The North Africans will face France at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday.

Obviously Osigoal is the beat striker in world football right now as the writer as pointed out. Unfortunately he and other talents like chukueze , Moffi , Ndidi , Iwobi could not display their talent at the world cup in Quarter due to poor football management and organization in the Country. My greatest fear is that Obviously, Morocco has raised the bar so high that making it out of a world cup group wont be news any longer for any African team.I have a strong and unwaivering conviction that Morroco will make it to the final and possibly win the world cup which might put rivals like Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroun and Algeria under intense presure. It is therefore, imperative for the NFF Officials and all Senators to shield their swords of self-centeredness , corruption, written notes , favoritism, bribery and the ilk and focus on discovering the talents that will deliver the world cup to black Africa come next 2 world cups. Granted Morroco have got top talents that have made the work of the coach easier but Nigeria as well has some talented footballers scattered all over the world waiting to be discovered .400miillion population should have players more than 37million population according to the tenets of the probability theory. Meaning if Morroco which has become a reference point for African countries can produce the number one goal keeper in a top club like Sevilla then Nigeria can produce top keepers playing for RealMadriid, Liverpool , Mancity and the ilks..This is not happening at the moment because despite the top keepers that abound every where its the mediocre ones who are connected to a senator or NFF official that end up being called up. Unfortunately , Nature has program the world in such a way that top talents no dey ever get person and majority are from poor backgrounds . Meaning unless the NFF sincerely and wholeheartedly go in search of them we might Never have one. As for the Coach I think its always better to go with your own to make it to the top.I have learnt in this world cup that once the matched gets to the quarter finals stages emotions start flairing up which can make a foreinger betray his team.I still remember in 1994 after Italy eliminated Nigeria news started making the rounds that Westerhof betrayed the Team and sold the match to Italy. I was too small then to comprehend what was been said but now I know that going by the immense emotional that accompanying the knock out stages it very possible for that to happen. So what is the way forward..? we can send some Nigerian coaches on training and attachment to foreign clubs like Barcelona or Madrid to learn first hand the secrets of their success and coaching tenets..People like Dangote and Otodola who normally splash money on the team for winning one or two games in major tournaments can take up that responsibility, other their Ocassional pledges to the team diring tournament will seem like some eye service. Getting to the semis in the world cup is not a days job. its a process. its involves long term planning and modelling. Morroco must have been working on the model displayed in this work long ago . I watched their female team last time and realised that they have improved tremendously playing same brand of slick passing game as their male counnterpart..That means there is a model being followed..As it stand now SE have no pattern .Indeed ,there is so much catch up work to be done by The NNF and presidency if Nigeria must remain relevant in world football in the years to come and the time to start is now…my battery is running low..let me recharge . see u soon.Happy xmas in advance.

How will Nigeria boys make impact when they select matches to play, pretending to be injured. How will the coach strategies when you don’t always have all you wanted. They only wait until tounament to show up to play. No passion at all

      • That’s because of the situation of the country and the bad government and football bodies in Nigeria

My people, can we please support our ex players to replace NFF so that everything can go smoothly.

Jay Jay have analyzed the strength of the Moroccan team and I agree with him.

I keep wondering whenever Oga Rohr followers praising each others and their former world class coach on CSN here.

You don’t have to be in Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man United and so on before you win a tournament or world cup.

Oga Rohr said it to Nigerians that Super Eagles players were not good enough to win the world cup because Nigeria did not have players in Barcelona and other top leagues.

Instead of him to talked the players up and build their confidence but he did not. His fans were carried away easily. He went to the world cup and failed woefully.

The squad he took to the Afcon was quite good enough to win the tournament but Oga Rohr just managed to win the 3rd place.

Since Mikel and Victor Moses departure, can anyone tell me Oga Rohr’s achievement? Just one. Amaju Pinnick really destroyed our football over six years of Oga Rohr. Where is Pinnick today if I may ask? He’s in Qatar watching the world cup live and direct while Nigerians are watching the tournament on DSTV.

I still believe we can get it right if chosen the right people to run Nigeria sports.

Can you imagine having Okocha, Kanu, Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal and many of them as the new NFF and Amunike, Egbo and Marnu Gerba as the new coaches of the Super Eagles Kai, with discipline, tribalism aside, determination, prayer, hard work and transparency, I think Nigeria can build a strong squad through our own and that can beat any team and will any tournament.

No time to waste time my people. We have what it takes to win the world if we put in the effort. Many thanks to you Mr. Okocha for your analysis. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Hahahahaha….Obunu oshi. Rohr was supposed to organize an AFCON for himself in year 2020 and a World cup in the year 2021 so that he can achieve something after Mikel and Moses retired.

Maybe you were brain dead when we qualified for 2022 AFCON with 2 games to spare despite being owe bonuses for 2 year and travelling by boat for international games Or maybe your senses were in Coma when we topped our WCQ group from day 1 to day 6 before your Mr no-sense Total failure Eguavoen came in to waste both of the old man’s efforts with disastrous exits from both competitions.

Oga Rohr qualified a team that had not been able to qualify for ordinary AFCON back-to-back under the care of your local overrated guadiolas for a World cup we had no business qualifying for…that in itself was an achievement. He was even 4 minutes away from reaching the R16 before your tin-god Victor Moses decided to sabotage the team and shamely retire as a consequence of his sabotage of the team at Russia.

And was he right to request our players should play in top clubs for us to reach WC qfinals…let see…..below is the line up of the Moroccan team that defeated Spain to qualify for the qfinals of Qatar 2022
      .
      .
      ……………….Sevilla (Spain) (FB)……………..
      PSG (France)(FB)….West Ham (England)…Bayern Munich (Germany)(FB)…Besiktas (Turkey)(FB)
      Chelsea (England)(FB)…Angers (France)…Fiorentina (Italy)(FB)…Standard Liege (Belgium)(FB)…Angers (France)(FB)
      ………………..Sevilla (Spain)
      .
      .
Oluya, how many 2nd division players or how many relegation battlers can you find in that starting lineup….??? But a useless drunkard like you was advocating for chaffs like Fanendo Adi and Jelili Anibaba to be called up

How many yeye “home-based” can you find in that lineup…??? But an agent of destruction like you was advocating for homebased players to be given automatic slots in the SE.

Count the number of FBs (foriegn borns) in that starting lineup and see how other sensible nations are harnessing all their foreign talents resources despite being back to back CHAN champions, but a blind despot like you was accusing Rohr of only looking for “ready-made players” rather than scouting your dead local league. Ngwa why are you not insulting the Morrocan coach for lining up 8 foreign borns in his starting lineup

Next time, when you want to think, think with your brain.

      Indeed, Rohr was right….!!!

Any coach can win AFCON with this team in 2 weeks…LMAOOoo…..We have the best team in Africa…..Awon opuro eranko oshi. 1 year later, its been from one disaster to the other under their “any coaches”….LMAOOoo

You have seen what most of us campaigned for being put to use with resounding success by Morocco, the same things you have vehemently spoken against on this forum, thief like you want to claim success too…..LMAOooo…Success has many parents….failure has none.

Go and stick with your failure, your mr no-nonsense dullard of a technical directr who destroyed a fledging national team within 3 months. May you all continue to wail in pain at the destruction you and your useless hags brought upon our football.

Thank God Pinnick didnt sack Rohr after 2019 AFCON, otherwise we wouldnt even have qualified for 2022 AFCON, talk more of getting beyond the R16 where we were booted out by a Tunisian B side led by a B coach….LMAOooo

      • You are a hypocrite. You claim no 2nd division players in the Moroccan team, yet you advocate for the likes of Musa, Shehu, and Ekong to be part of our national team due to experience. You might actually be a narcissist.

Rohr was supposed to use his money to organize an AFCON in the year 2020 and the World cup in the year 2021 so that he can have an achievement year 2019 when Moses and Mikel had retired, because Omo9ja needs answers to what was Rohr’s achievement after 2019.

You really have time replying some senseless imbecile on this platform, They talk about top 5 league has if that’s all it takes to win tournament, the teams with the best league in the world are both eliminated, does it have to do with the league you play in or the cohesion between players. Croatia’s goal keeper is a local boy, not playing for a top 5 club, same with morocco, they have different blend of players from different clubs. Abeg allow them make noise. Let them keep begging second hand foreign based players

      • Greenturf 2 years ago

@KENNETH but majority of the Croatian players aside playing in top 5 leagues in Europe, they play for the best clubs.
The midfield constitutes of players from Chelsea,Real Madrid,Inter-Milan,Tottenham.From the way they play the maturity the calmness on the ball, knowing what to do on and off the ball it takes experience playing at the highest level to play that way.
Especially when they conceded 7 minutes from time, the way they played before and after their well deserved equaliser was commendable. It takes experience playing for top sides to do what they did.I saw the goal coming and wasn’t surprised when they scored it was well deserved.

        • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

Are you minding that long mouthed pig…..LMAOooo

He thinks it is his senseless “determination” that got Croatia to the Semifinals of the WC….LMAOoo.

Imbecile mentioned the goalkeeper alone but refused to mention the Chelsea, Realmadrid, InterMilan, Bayern Munich, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig, Stuttgart etc players who are the main spine of the team, so that he wouldn’t get choked on his own saliva….LMAOoo. He should tell us how many of his SE players play in such caliber of clubs that makes him expect a place in the World cup quaterfinals

About 18 of the Croatian players played in the UEFA Champions league this season…including the Goal keeper that fool is referring to. As a matter of fact, only about 4 or 5 of the 26man squad are not playing in European competitions this season. He should tell us how many of his own SE players are playin the the UEFA Champions league this season….LMAOo

Someone should help us tell that senseless illiterate that 179 out of the 208 players (about 86%) that reached the quarterfinals of this year’s world cup play in either EPL, Laliga, Bundesliga, Seria A, Ligue 1, Dutch league or Portugese League. (NB: I didnt consider other European leagues, just the top 7 alone)

Another person should help us tell that imbecile that 82 out of the 104 players (almost 80%) that reached the semifinals of this year’s world cup play in either EPL, Laliga, Bundesliga, Seria A, Ligue 1, Dutch league or Portugese League. (NB: I didnt consider other European leagues, just the top 7 alone).

Let the fools who claim playing in the top leagues is not a necessity continue to fool themselves.

          Cohesion between players my foot.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran, Costa Rica, Tunisia and Canada should have used your stupid cohesion to reach the semifinals like Morrocco and Croatia na…..LMAOoo

@Omo9ja my friend its impossible for team spirit alone to win you world cup games without top stars..Granted Morocco don’t have Messi and Rinaldo but they have a goal keeper who was rated the beat keeper in laliga last season, a rightback who is considered by many pundits today to be the beat on planet Earth. Ziyech ability is very close to that of Messi and C boy..To cut a long story short Most of the Moroccans players play in top clubs around the world. These are players who are use to playing top level football.Whether its a home base player he must be in top Moroccan top who play CAF Champions league year in, year out. Team spirit without top talents and a tough mentality is dead. That’s the summary of the world matter.

  • Morocco has 90 percent of it’s squad playing top level football…..Right from the goal keeper who was Laliga best goal keeper last season….. From defense to attack play their football in England Spain Itali France or Germany….. They definitely won’t have that stage fright Because they are used to such environment and they compete with such players week in week out……They also possess the required talent to match any players In
the world toe to toe…..they have players in Chelsea, PSG ,Wolves Villarreal ,Fiorentina,Sevilla,Betis, etc…….The only ingredient the coach needed to add was the motivation and How to unleash them on opponents to bring out the best in them……which he did perfectly well with a little bit of technical know how and not to forget luck too……That is all that they needed not unity because every team came as a United team….. Nigeria must learn from this Morocco adventure……How many of their so called local based players are you seeing there even as they have one of the best league in Africa?……How many retirement players who play in China and Saudi league do you see there? Or you think they don’t have such experience players?…….The older and most experienced players in that team either play in the premier league,Laliga,or Italian league……We can’t be planting cassava and expecting to harvest yam…..haba

    • Greenturf 2 years ago

      Well said @AKp

    • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

“…How many retirement players who play in China and Saudi league do you see there?…”

31 year old center forward Abderrazak Hamdallah plays in the Saudi League
33 year old 2nd choice goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi plays in the Saudi League
Their captain who is now 32 years old used to play in the EPL and Ligue 1…he now plays in the Turkish league.

If it were to be in Nigeria, people who know football more than the coach would have asked them to be chased away from the national team.

Sensible coaches do not just do away with experience. They dont force players into retirement because they want to create visa free opening for young, arrogant players (a la Dennis Bonaventure). Rather they make the young players show they are ready to bear the Mark by displacing the older ones and forcing them to retire by themselves

You are right but in the case of Ahmed Musa,he wasn’t playing well for Nigeria hence the clamour by majority for him to call it a day.I’m sure if Musa was playing so well for Nigeria and his experience counting on the pitch I doubt any right thinking Nigeria will question his involvement in the team.
I know you are a diehard fan of Musa but I also know and respect you as someone who stands for truth and excellence.
You mentioned in the past former captain’s of the super eagles was kept in the team beyond their prime so why can’t Musa enjoy same privileges, the big question I want to ask is,should we continue in this trend or should it be abolished? How productive is it to the super eagles project?I’m sure the Moroccan players you mentioned who plays in Turkey and Asian leagues are relevant on the pitch for their country otherwise they won’t be part of the team of a country that choose excellence and shuns nepotism.
Nothing against Musa though but I feel every player called up must be the best we have at the time regardless of age, tribe where they ply their trade and religion.

        • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

The last time I checked, in our last competitive match, Ahmed Musa come on and delivered 2 direct assists and 2 pre-assists.

His average for the national team remains about 1 goal contribution in every 3 international games till date, even as “dead” as some of you claim he is

The last time I also checked, Ahmed Musa is currently registered and playing in this season’s Europa League with Sivasspor.

So really don’t understand what you mean by that your excuse of “being relevant on the pitch” which you are making for the Morrocans.

Point of correction, I am not a fan of Musa…..I am a fan of the truth and equity. Of all our SE Captains in the twilight of their international careers, Musa is still the most active and playing at the highest level. I cant remember any of our captain playing in European competitions at the twilight of their international careers….if you can recall any kindly let us know. Yet we treated them with dignity and eased them out honorably.

Musa’s case is that of pure tribal and religious bigotry and that’s a fact. One mad dog has even made it a habit to bring Musa into the equation even when the thread is about Gianni Infantino or Serena Williams….LMAOoo. None of you ever complains of Kenneth Omeruo and Henry Onyekuru’s continued invitation to the SE even when they have only been bench warmers for ages, the same way none of you ever complained when other captains where being given the same treatment (even mikel had to be brought out of retirement to wear the SE armband to 2019 AFCON only to be a collosal flop at the tournament)….but now that it is a muslim from the north it has become an issue. If that is not bigotry, I wonder what is.

Musa’s commanding presence in the team was evident when we won a penalty vs Sao Tome and he handpicked the man to take it. Nobody dared argue with him. It was evident. We all saw it. Even Victor Osimhen didnt say pim.

Can we say the same about when we won a penalty vs Portugal…?? Utter disgrace was what we saw of 3 players and 1 coach fighting about who should take a penalty in a mere friendly match.

According to one of our wise sayings, “when a thing lasts for a season, it becomes a tradition”. A national team captain has never been one we throw away like used diapers in Nigeria. So whether it is a Chukwu Chibueze or a Shuaibu Danbata, what has been good for the goose should also be good for the gander.

And just to Answer AKP’s question once again:
          * 31 year old center forward Abderrazak Hamdallah who now plays in the Saudi League after playing in the Chinese league is still in the team
          * 33 year old 2nd choice goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi plays in the Saudi League is still in the team
          * Their captain who is now 32 years old used to play in the EPL and Ligue 1…he now plays in the Turkish league is still in the team after a decade

Make of that information whatever you think of it.

Musa did well in our last competitive match I did acknowledge that in my previous post.I want to see him do well against better opponents but you will agree with me prior to our last competitive match which was against opponent ranked among the poorest by FIFA he has been very poor in my views.
The likes of Omeruo has been commanding for the super eagles he had a good nations cup despite our second round exit.
Onyekuru is having a great season in Turkey and still has his trade mark speed.
The previous captain’s was favoured with one competition after that they called it quit but Musa wants to carry on and when you have overstayed your welcome there will be a clamour by fans who would want you dropped from the team.It was the case with Keshi and others no one wanted them in the team because they weren’t adding value to the team it’s got nothing to do with tribalism or religion. After about 80 caps Musa has not played really well for the super eagles. His performance at club level isn’t good enough to be called to the national team unless he is the kind of player who does well for country only but so far he’s not.
We supported his invitation when he was in great form.If we were bigotry like you said,we won’t see anything good in his prime despite delivering quality shifts.A hater is a hater..Most of us are against Onuachu’s invitation when super eagles list were realised because his club form wasn’t being replicated when on national duty,if actually some section of fans are bigots they will applaud the coach for inviting a south eastern.
The point I was making is,fans are like coaches, they want to win all the time they want the most in form players who will make winning a lot easier.
I am not against Musa,I just want the best for the super eagles going forward. If Musa plays well enough for his club to be considered for our future games then the coach is doing the right thing.

      • there you go again, @Dr. Drey youwrite up and contradict your own write up. the point is Morocco have those players as you put retirement players there because they have non better to call in that position. in Nigeria’s case why have Musa there, when you have Victor Moses being the best player in Russian league at the time when Osimhen now Napoli team mate Khvica Khvarasteria was there?. Why Have Musa in there when Chidera Ejuke was in the same Club CSKA Moscow where musa played his best Football in his life, Why Have call upon Ighalo drop Ighalo call Ighalo when we should have been blending the likes of Awoniyi and Moffi and Sadiq from the Get go why call upon Abdulahi Shehu in the nock out games when he was Warming the bench in Cyprus?????????????. Don’t you see the point Teams like Morocco and Ghana will rather call the best players and only fall back on old legs if the best they have is injured or they do not have but in Nigeria politics kills everything. You think Morocco will go to WC with a Bench Warmer as captian?, Lol you must be dreaming and it is this same mentality that you have that Majority Nigerians have football should not care what you have done in the past unless you are a player like CR7 or Messi which Musa definitely is not

        • And don’t tell me Victor Moses Retired the point is Nigeria do Not have there Priorities straight and this was the final straw for me with ROhr and Pinnick why push for Ighalo when you have many players in hot form at the time and beg Ighalo out of retirement when the Player they should have been showing that much interest and persuasion on was Victor Moses I have no doubt in my mind at the time If Victor Moses was persuaded as much as Ighalo was Moses would have Rescinded his decision as he was going to offer Nigeria More than Ighalo I mean he did carry a Spartak Moscow team on his Back to the next round at the Europa leage just a few months before the AFCON game.

I wouldnt reply you…not because I dont know the right reply to dish out to you, but because you arent dignified enough to be worthy of such regard from me.

I just want to bust your lie that Morrocco doesnt have “better” players in the positions of those 30plus year olds

A certain 27 year old Munir El Haddadi, a former Barcelona Striker who still plays in the Laliga with Getafe is very much active and available

A certain Ayoob Elkaarbi, 29 year old Striker who was CHAN top scorer the last time out and has scored 20 goals in 36 international matches for Morroco still plays for Hatayspor in Turkey

Anas Zniti, the 2 time CHAN winning and Raja Casablanca goal keeper is still very much alive and kicking.

Former Villareal CB Sofian Chakla is still very very much active, not to talk of 26 CB year old Samy Mmaee of Fenrencvaros who has played every single minute in the Europa League this season as his team topped their group

Not to talk of other “younger” ones whom most of you claim the older ones are “blocking” from having a shot at the national team.

So shove that your lie the “….Morrocco doesnt have “better” players in the positions of those 30plus year olds….” down the dustbin. Morrocco can raise another 22 man squad of young talented quality players from Europe if they need to.

They just simple have a sensible coach who knows the place of having tested and trusted old soldiers in the team to mainain the right balance between youthful exuberance and the tact of age.

Mind you, this isnt the deserved reply yet to your rant above….it is just to put a douse the pungent smell to the lies and fallacy you have come to put up once again in typical fashion.

“…with a little bit of technical know how…”, please watch this analysis of how Morocco play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4kUGaCNaug
It is not a little bit of technical knowledge, it is a strategic way of playing. Success breeds unity especially when all the players buy ino a system or tactic of playing.

What is wrong with Nigerians that they think planning is only ‘a little bit’ of success and that effort and determination is all.
Effort without planning is inefficient and would lead to failure. Planning involves strategising and implementing tactics for success.

Which successful man do you know that did not plan? The difference between Dangote and other cement traders is Dangote planned through investment to enter cement production, others that have been selling cement like him did not plan to progress their business.

@Akp. you made a lot of sense. Your points are in line with what every right-thinking Nigerian should embrace.
omo9ja is a confused individual who, along with his cohorts, brought Nigeria football to its present dilapidations state. omo9ja have to come clean, just like Pinnick did, or he will never be taken seriously. Omo9ja have to convince the Fans that Nigeria football gained upward and move forward after Rohr was summarily dismissed. The dismissal was single handedly orchestrated by omo9ja soon after Russia and he never relent until he saw Rohr’s back. He was the sole advocate of ‘would rather fail with our own’ concept that encouraged and motivated Dare, and Pinnick NFF to fire our competent coach who was removed prematurely to the detriment to our national interests thus preventing Super Eagle from going to FIFA World Cup. Are Nigerian happy with what we have today as a coach? Omo9ja, please raise your hand if you are satisfied with Peseiro Managment style of this current guy who has lost 7 matches in a row. Don’t come here singing another tune hoping, Nigerian will forget your duplicity in Rohr sacking.

Ogbeni shut you filthy mouth, if it were to be the local coaches that were losing games like peserio wouldn’t you have been commenting, calling for them to be fired, but no he is still on the job because na white man. Abeg spare us the noise. Go out there and find job for Rorh and let us have peace

  • 17 OF THEM PLAY IN EUROPE WHILE THE REMAINING PLAY IN MORROCO WHAT EXALT KESHI DOES WHEN HE WON THE 2013 NATION CUP? BLEND OF SERIOUS FOOTBALLERS WITH THE RIGHT COACH AND COMPETENT FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION.

  • Nigerians, Nigerians, N-i-g-e-r-i-a-n-s, don’t expect to reap where you did not sow, the blame game and name calling is just starting unless something is urgently done about how we grow and discover talents locally in the Country. Nigeria, a country with a population of 200 million do not have any formal system or structure deliberately designed to grow and hunt for our raw talents from the grassroot. Football Academies WILL NOT HELP US because most of our real talents are wasting away in all the Ajegunles around the country and the only way to reach them is via the school system. Our football MUST be taken back to Primary, Secondary and Higher institutions for developmental purposes. It will cost Nigeria next to nothing to create football competitions in our school system as it was in the past when we had principal cup, it can be resuscitated or redesigned so that we can begin to take our right of place in global football. Doing otherwise will only give birth to monumental failure in all football competitions. My people my people let us invest the energy we spend fighting each other and wasting on name calling in the FIGHT FOR OUR FOOTBALL TO BE RETURNED TO OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR GRASSROOT DEVELOPMENT.
