Qatar 2022: ‘Some French Players Are Happy With Benzema’s Departure’ —Ex-Uruguay Star

Former Uruguay international Diego Lugano says he is certain there are French players who are delighted that Karim Benzema won’t be part of the squad for this year’s World Cup.

The reigning Ballon d’Or winner was ruled out of the World Cup after tearing a muscle in his left thigh.

Benzema has now failed to make a second appearance at the World Cup after first participating at the 2014 edition in Brazil.

He joined the likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe and Christopher Nkunku who missed out due to injury.

And Lugano, who led Uruguay to an impressive fourth-placed finish at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, believes the Real Madrid star’s exit is welcomed by some of his teammates.

“I am certain, because I was a teammate with some of them, (there are players from France) who are very happy with the departure of Benzema,” Lugano was quoted on Football Espana Twitter handle.

France are in Group D with Tunisia, Denmark and Australia and will kickoff their campaign against the Aussies on Tuesday, 22 November.
