Ritchie Admits Sadness At Losing Benitez

Newcastle wide man Matt Ritchie says it was disappointing to lose Rafa Benitez but says the players must back the new appointment. The Magpies have endured a tumultuous summer so far after the Spaniard left at the end of June, after a disagreement between himself and Mike Ashley over the future of the club.

It means Newcastle are still without a manager with just over three weeks until the start of the new season when they take on Arsenal at St James’ Park. Steve Bruce has been heavily tipped to take the reins at Newcastle after the boyhood fan departed Sheffield Wednesday.

Ritchie says that as much he is disappointed to lose Benitez, the squad and fans must rally around the new boss. He said: “To see the manager go was disappointing. He had a good reign here. “It’s no secret as to how good he was.

“The success we had under him – we had two good finishes in the Premier League and promotion from the Championship. “So yes, it’s a blow because he’s a top manager, but there are good managers out there and we’re now looking forward to the new manager coming in. “The new manager will want to add players but we’re preparing so that when the new manager does come in, we can hit the ground running.”
