Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has heaped plaudits on his players following their 2-1 win against the Squirrels of Benin in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on Wednesday, reports Completesports.com.
“We are happy about this victory, we knew before the match that it would be very difficult because Benin have one of the best organisation defensively,” Rohr told a post-match conference after the game in Uyo.
“They (Benin) have a good team and unfortunately, we conceded an early goal which was a shock for us and we had to recover from this and with our attitude, we had to make them tire out to get the result.
“The players showed great reaction coming from a goal down in front of a half-full stadium to win.
“We had opportunities but scoring more goals against Benin was difficult because they were too defensive.
“Now we have a new style of playing – which involves a lot of movement, quick passing, and one touch. We could have scored a third goal but I’m happy with the performance of my team considering that you came from a goal down to win 2-1.”
The Super Eagles lead Group L with three points after Lesotho and Sierra Leone played out a 1-1 draw in Freetown.
The three-time African champions will face the Crocodiles of Lesotho in a matchday-two fixture at the Setsoto Stadium, Maseru on Sunday.

Why was the stadium so empty? Uyo fans used to troop out to the games.
Please, good people of Uyo, keep supporting the SE so that the NFF will not use the empty stadium as an excuse to take our games to Agege Stadium!
I think because the match was played on a week days ‘Wednesday’…
I think they really have to take the SuperEagles back to the National Stadium Surulere. A stadium always filled with die hard fans even if the game is played without flood light. SuperEagles are never intimidated in Lagos. They have to bring the SuperEagles back to AGBO ILE.
Please, I mean not abuse or disrespect…
Take a close look at the picture attached to this article…
Look at Akpeyi, and have a glance at how he is looking, it seems he has lazy eyes…
I might be wrong though…
Dude is still very much Successful with those Lazy Eyes so _bro watx up’?
Ola Aina has become such a delight to watch. He is the most improved SE player at d moment.
Congratulations, coachee, you’ve gotten the job done. No doubt, csn would’ve been flooded with incredible comments if we had lost as the benenuos drew the first blood. That’s how it’s done, take it one step at a time. So much stability in the team.
Baba stop the hate speech nobody will ever be happy to be the son of a loser! Blood is thick naija makes us one regardless of the drama evolving the country!
I don’t understand@ China Samuels. Pls, how is my post a hate speech?? Or don’t I have the right to air my view ? Do you really know the meaning of hate speech before u used that phrase? I believe u dint. I have sheath my sword and hence would not like to get myself involved in any meaningless altercation. I would rightly say u would’ve been one of those people I was making reference to had the result gone otherwise. Keep the volume down, don’t draw unnecessary attention. Cheers.
I’m not one of them neither do we have anyone wishing his country to fail just to mock. That’s the whole point, Ayphilly also made a comment like yours and I think all this reference is not worth it at a time most people in the forum have realized that for a better naija is the cause of any submission even if sometimes we disagree. So anybody who comes here thinking anyone wants naija to fail must be a newbie who we all must correct instead of taking sides.
You can watch the highlights below.
A much better view than what NTA showed

Sadly, it is difficult to analyse the match as we had to endure 90 minutes of eyesore and ear pain courtesy of NTA 1970 broadcast style.

Samchi I totally disagree with you on that… The way things are going with the super eagles many of the foreign born would start begging to represent super eagles,,, it happened with u17 we were the record holders that alone was massive attraction to many foreign born players but we know the story,, many of them were turned down.
Something similar is going to happen soon with the super eagles.. Rohn has brought this stability into the team,, everyone knows and don’t need to be told that his players are picked on merit which is bringing out the best from our players, unlike other junior teams where no one is sure if players were picked on merit or not…
Nff should pls retain rohn, we were never like this few years ago.
My Country people i don carry another Totori yarn enter una dommot o!!!
Remember one oyibo Naija correct baller wey dey injury tete’ eim don come bck oohh!!
