Rohr Recalls Musa, Akpeyi For Super Eagles Vs Benin, Lesotho

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has recalled the trio of Ahmed Musa, Daniel Akpeyi and Mikel Agu for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double header against Benin and Lesotho, reports Completesports.com.

Musa, who is the captain of the team has not make an appearance for the Super Eagles since their third place encounter against Tunisia at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt due to injury.

He missed the Super Eagles last two friendlies against Ukraine and Brazil.

Akpeyi has been overlooked since the AFCON in Egypt where he was first choice goalkeeper. He has been in fantastic form for Kaizer Chiefs in the ABSA Premier League this season.

Defensive midfielder Agu has not been considered by the national team since he missed the cut to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He has since been posting impressive displays for Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes.

Brighton defender Leon Balogun has been placed on standby as he has struggled to break into the first team at the Premier League club.

Other players placed on standby are injured Stoke City midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo and Czech Republic-based striker Peter Olayinka.

The Super Eagles will open their qualifying campaign for the AFCON in Cameroon on November 14 in Uyo and three days later travel to Lesotho for second qualifying game.

  • Well not bad,but I think that our goal keeper coach is not doing a good job,so he has never scout another keeper since to replace this akpankita

  • Chima E Samuels 5 years ago

Etebo on standby coach rohr dont abuse this guy.

    • @Chima, Alwaysbtake time to read before you comment. It’s because of injury. Etebo still remain SE best midfielder.

      • Chima E Samuels 5 years ago

Baba Etebo is back from injury abeg.

      • Chima E Samuels 5 years ago

Against Sheffield he had a cramp but there was a news of his availability anyway make we leave am here if the said groin is not yet healed.

  • Sunnyb 5 years ago

I think because Rohr is not sure about Etebo availability due to injury, Rohr will never place is best midfielder on standby list, hey, but  again with Nigeria anything is possible.

  • Silva 5 years ago

Rohr what does players like okechukwu azubuike and cyriel dessers did to you that makes you not to invite them???

  • gowetok 5 years ago

Etebo is not Nigeria’s best at the moment. midfield is not all about hassles and hacking every ball, its more about knowing what to do wen u have the ball. Ete is too stiff.moreover the league he plays in doesn’t do him any good. Know sane coach will put a player who plays in the Europa or champions league ahead of sme1 who plays in a lower league. With the Arrival mikel agu, joe Aribo and Azees i think Etebo’s days with the super Eagles are number except he moves to a better league.

  • Ololo 5 years ago

    My opinion

1 where is ebere eze, I honestly feel he has made a mistake to turn down the opportunity to play for Nigeria which he might regret, but I won’t blame him entirely, this game is an international game not a friendly, and if he happened to feature which is likely he would become cap tied to Nigeria.. He needs to think about it thoroughly and not jump into a decision ,but I honestly feel his career would be Better with Nigeria, but I can’t chose for him.

2 balogun on stand by list shows how rohn loves that man, his case is similar to iheancho who is frozen out of the first team but an iheanacho still finds game time and scores in lower matches compareed to balogun who doesn’t play any at all yet he is on standby list. I wish he moves away from the epl so he could come back to the team, but it might be too late for him, our defense is the best since I started following Nigeria game, even a Kenneth is not sure of starting 11 as things are at present and awaziwm has shown he deserves to play in the first team so how on earth would balogun get back to stating 11.

3 I expected rohn to list another striker since oshimen is not completely 100 % but he decides not to, meaning we might get to see onuachu in action again if oshimen gets injured or can’t play at all, if an onuacuh doesn’t do well this time he should be dropped for other options ,he has been given enough time

  • Olusegun. B 5 years ago

    Why. Daniel Akpeyi?
Isn’t there anyone else ,ehn!I don’t know what’s going on concerning Etebo but right now the list is out so coach better start working ….

  • Ikeben 5 years ago

CSN,Note that Mikel Agu was called up for the Afcon qualifier after the world cup against South Africa. But lost his place again because of injury.

I said clearly here that Akpeyi will likely make the list base on 2 things 1. Current form 2. Injury to Uzoho. And Rohr is respecter of form

My only reservation, is Onuachu who has been given so much opportunity but has not impressed. Even Simone Nwankwo did not get half of this opportunity and was discarded.

In all a good team that should do the job with ease.

    • Patrick 5 years ago

Onuachu is not supposed to be in the list .I will prefer okereke to onuachu.

  • Xhuxhu 5 years ago

Good squad list but would’ve loved to see Ebere Eze on this list but we can’t make this decision for him.
But an Ndidi,Aribo and Eze Midfield will be a tasty midfield not lacking in creativity..

  • Shege Luzzy 5 years ago

I can’t remember the last time shehu Abdullahi put up any decent performance for the super eagles. As for Akpeyi, even if he catches rockets fired from Gaza with one hand,We don’t need him again. He should reject that call up voluntarily. We are tired of school boy errors. This time around the guy fit go join the wall and leave the goal post untended .

He does not command genuine confidence from majority of the populace .it is that bad

    • Bishop 5 years ago

Your humor is awesome. But I want to know if he makes such school boys errors in his club and why do they keep playing him in his club?

      • Beagle 5 years ago

His clubs first choice goalkeeper itumeleng khune is in a long time injury list of Kaiser chiefs his club. But that notwithstanding akpeyi is doing well in his club now and did very well in their last Saturday’s telcom knockout challenge. I support you to say let’s give him a chance may be he has summoned up good courage and has learned from his mistakes in his goal keeping position because he is aware that he is being criticised for his school boy errors.

    • Chairmanfemi 5 years ago

“He should reject the call-up voluntarily”…lolz

      I can’t stop laughing…ahhhahhh.. lol.

But for real, We don’t need Akere(Basket) anymore.

    • Gajere 5 years ago

“He should reject the call voluntarily”; ” this time around the fit go join wall and leave the post unattended”! Hilarious. You no go kill person. Today, the forum belongs to you, sir!

      • “……even if he catches rockets fired from Gaza…..” I buckled up with laughter. Awesome.

Akpeyi is an excellent club goalie, but not a national player. Fans are too critical and make him flutter like clothes hanging on the line in harmattan wind.

    • Very funny … join wall? nawao

    • Pompei 5 years ago

Wait ooo, guy if Akpeyi can catch Gaza rocket with one hand, we need him big time! Hehehehe! Nice one. This Akpeyi issue, na wa. Let’s hope current form claims are valid. Let’s hope that top performance in SA league will translate to top performance on international duty, which to me is a different situation entirely. I agree with the opinion that our goalkeeper trainers are letting us down.

  • Bobo Colorado springs 5 years ago

To be honest, super eagles is full of talented players at the moment, and going to be very difficult to be guaranteed a position in the team; very competitive.

  • Chairmanfemi 5 years ago

Good Squad BUT The inclusion of Daniel Akpeyi(A.k.a Akpere-Basket) and Tall for nothing PAUL Onuachu is questionable and not a good one for me. We have better Lanky inform strikers in Simmy and Sadiq Umar than this Tall for nothing Onuachu. How Simmy was dismissed from the squad till date amazes me! He wasn’t given the chance to prove himself that long like the Chance being given to Onuachu. I remember Simmy first game against DRC in Calabar en-route World Cup, He was lively all through and unlucky not to have scored. A more better striker to me. But who I be?? Maybe someone up there is Onuachu’s godfather..who knows

Apart from those two, the rest are very much welcomed. Happy to have Captain MUSA back though I would love to see him starts from the bench that day cuz Kalu-Oshimen-Chukwueze trio seems much better. Also, Welcome back to Hard-tackling and Fast improving MIKEL Agu and also The Russian man Bryan Idowu. He’s been having game times of recent for Lokomotiv Moscow and has been impressive.
All the best to the team. Please I would prefer Maduka Okoye or Match Rusty Ezenwa to that Fear-Fear for the two legs oo..Coach Rohr

    #AFCON 2021..Here we come

    • Glory 5 years ago

Lolzzz. Akpere d basket. @chairmanfemi, HOW WE GO DO AM naim cause all of this.

    • Simy is in great form for club. This onuachu guy still baffles me..

    • Yhykhy2000 5 years ago

I prefer make we no get goalkeeper on the match day than to have mahrez friend as our goalkeeper…‍♂️‍♂️

  • Cyriel Dessers scored another brace yesterday night making it 7 goals in 12 matches and this is happening at the time we need another sharp shooter! here’s a foreign born that is begging for a chance now… Nigeria will be running around him soon when Belgium finally sees him…then he will become a bad guy.

    • Glory 5 years ago

Sure Rohr has to look Dessers, Simmy n Sadiq way in any of our next friendlies. Very understandable why he couldn’t have invited them now.

  • Ololo 5 years ago

This is not time for new players, these matches are international matches and would need total concentration not the unnecessary distractions a new entrant would bring to the team.. This is an experienced coach who knows the game.
This is time for the aribo and chukweze to put to work all they learnt with all our friendly games..

Something tells me onuachu would score in one of the matches, the team is highly competitive, any player who doesn’t perform well knows he can’t be sure of another invitation.. Players like esiti cannot complain, players like isahor can never complain, on their own they know they are not in the required level for now..

I love the growth in our present team.. players don’t go the media to complain when dropped, thanks to rohn

  • The list above relaased by coach Rohr represents a number of variables which include the following:

-Continuity : the bulk of the players invited are those that Rohr has worked with; those who buy into his methods ; those who – at one time or the other – have contributed to the success the Super Eagles have amassed in recent times.

    – Reward: for the most part, players who play regularly and those who have played well for their clubs have been rewarded with call ups.

    – Consistency: there are no shocks, Rohr has remained both predictable and consistent in his team selection.

    – Potentials:it is now undeniable that Rohr’s boys have what it takes to face the best teams in the world and grind out positive results. This team has huge potentials.

    – Rebuilding: the injection of newer names or notable returnees reveal that the rebuilding process continues.

    – Exclusions: the exclusion of some big name players serve to highlight the strength in depth and opportunities open to the team at this point in time.

The Super Eagles would be expected to claim maximum points from the upcoming matches. The list of players invited do have what it takes to achieve this outcome.

    • mr Hush 5 years ago

      @deo

You said it, I couldn’t have stated it better than the valid points you gave.

Though some names on the list haven’t laid a good impression on me based on their past performances for country (Onuachu, Akpeyi, looking at you guys); but we can’t take anything away from the gaffer inviting them based on continuity and consistency on their part for their clubsides. Besides, this is a serious qualifier and should be taken as such. The coach just stuck to the players he knows and have done right by him. It is his decision and his neck on the line. At this stage we can only support his choice and wish them well; it is for our own good.
There are always going to matches ahead,so those not on the list right now, should keep doing what they know how to do best. When your performance is consistently positive, there is no way you would be denied an invitation.if not, questions would arise.
For now, I wish the Super Eagles the best. Time to get the business done.6points in the bag.

      • Thanks Mr Hush. Really quality input from you too in the submission above.

  • Among these .let rohr chose his 1st eleven and me choose my eleven to face rohr rohr eleven . My team will beat rohr”s team 3: 1.with Simmmy uMar on my side .

      SEGA or NINTENDO…..?!

      • Rohr is not a good coach. I hate him on our bench in as much as i try to like and support him he is like wen u give pure white casava to a goat he will still shit black tablets. My question is 1, in belgium before osihmen came i followed onyekuru till the last days in eupen a verry low profile club but onyekuru scored 24 goals he went to galatasary scored 15 goals. He scored against liberia in frendly scored against sychelis and also asisited why did rohr hate him with passion. In the past four years onyekuru as done more than musa. Both samuel and kalu why did rohr hate him? Rohr God will hate u forever for hating such a wonderfull tilent who outclassed ur victor moses in turkey last season? 2 why will u insist on likes of esiti and agu even ndidi becos u are blindman let me tel u we dont need tacklers, we need ballers nwakali azubuike onazi
These guys will always remain in our mind wether u like it or not. 3 josh maja let me tell u dennis burnaventur put along unuacho cannot spell that guy feet in football. U are not a coach u and piknic are just pretenders. Ur ego will not alow u think right

You need ballers like Nwakali and Onazi….you mean the same Nwakali that last played league football in March….? Or Onazi that has been injured since Amadioha knows when…??

Goodmorn forumite,Iam an astute lover of anything German(except now that made in Nigeria is being preached and am buying into it cos is the best way to go) My reasons for German products is not far-fetch ruggedity, effeciency and reliability. All of these the hallmark of German products built upon sound research, patience qualitative analysis et al.
Rohr has brought in the general German attitude and expertise to the SE and will build a world class team with a ten year life span if allowed to ie all things being equal.
A look at the SE now one can see a team on its toes, players with the doo or die attitude knowing well that if i sleep i might loose my space.Yes Etebo had an injury but seem to have recovered somewhat from it so might not be so fit to play. But a super Eagles of 5 years ago a half fit Etebo will work straight back into the team and even play full match with the resultant consequences. The fact that Etebo, with his pedigree in SE is on the stand by speaks volume and a huge statement that this team is growing and no one is indispensable.
With the efficiency of Leon Balogun and the dexterity with which he Mans the defence one will think that the Coach will keep playing him when u also consider the fact that he speaks German like the Coach, that should swing him straight into the team. But the Coach is not cutt out for sentiment he’s an efficient coach who believes so much in the importance of playing regular football cos of its attendant effect on the players fitness.
I still find it hard a difficult pill to swallow when anyone condemns this coach of being biased.Once upon a time more than half of the super Eagles team and more than 90% of the first eleven are bench warmers in there clubs. But that is no longer the case.Five or 7 years ago Kelechi will work straight into the first eleven even with his present predicament.I saw Kele against Burton and he was surpringly sharp and full of running and dribbles and could still be managed, but the Coach says no cos there has to be standard and am building a world class team that does not give room to bench warmers.
Akpeyi ohhh Akpeyi…..i have consistently said he’s a victim of circumstance.Rohr will invite him no matter what anyone says why?cos he’s not only playing he’s doing very well.presently the best keeper in the entire South African league.I asked for a mention of any other blunder made by this guy aside from the one against Argentina in that friendly, and no one gave me any.Aside from his excessive display of demeanour which to me is simply inherent and not a show of weakness or fear, this guy is good and currently has the best reflex in the SE even better than Uzoho.Going by the present policy of the Coach even if Chukwueze becomes a bench warmer in his club today he will not be invited.
On players invitation,Rohr said on Tomori after he Tomori granted an interview recently which seems he may have a change of mind to player for SE.Rohr said it is an insult for players to think that Nigeria is a second fiddle which can be resulted to when bigger teams do not come calling. This coach understands that our team is growing with its attendant issues, but should not be made to play a second fiddle to other teams which is in consonant with the world class team he’s building.
Players invitation is done based on policy and standard and not sentiment. The core of the team will be broken and disorganised if we jump to invite all the players doing well in Europe.I follow Nigeria guys a lot I have a thousand and one of them that can walk straight to the SE team right now,I know that it is not done that way.You must have a need before you make an invitation.Except u find a particular possition either vacant or the player playing there is inept u don’t invite any player for the purpose of it.Aside Benzima Lacazzet remains the best 9 for France, but the bench warmer Gourou keeps getting invite above them, why cos of team chemistry and cohesion.Aside my profession, am also a music teacher who can be likened to being a football coach cos of the intricacy involved in music. If u have a team of choiristers say ten whom u have trained and rehearsed with for a long time and alas on the day of the competition one of the team memeber say, a tenor singer gets missing u will catch cold cos u cant bring anyone else to replace same no matter how musically incline the replacement is.I understand that we have so much love for SE so we wish it well. But players invitation is simply at the discretion of the coach and great coaches always no what they want and don’t just invite u cos u r good.
The under 23 captain has been clamoured for an inclusion in SE.Now, I have discovered that that might not come in a long while cos of quest for tall players which Rohr has penchant for.Dont blame him every German blooded coach love very tall players most especially in the mid section and defence, with slight variation where necessary.Okechukwu is a fine player but might not fit into Rohrs plan for now.
I sincerely no that this SE will make us proud but we must be patient and ensure that this chain of continuity is not broken.

    • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

“….Aside my profession, am also a music teacher who can be likened to being a football coach cos of the intricacy involved in music. If u have a team of choiristers say ten whom u have trained and rehearsed with for a long time and alas on the day of the competition one of the team member say, a tenor singer gets missing u will catch cold cos u cant bring anyone else to replace same no matter how musically incline the replacement is….”

May God continue to bless you for that piece above.

I am an trainer as well and I know how frustrating it is, when theres no consistence in attendance from learnerss.

Let those who have become perpetual wailers continue to wail. If they cannot come to terms with the fact that 1 new student in a class can set the entire class backwards in what has been learnt in 2 weeks let them continue to wail.

They think realife football is like the video games they play where they just select players and select formations and the gaming algorithm does the rest. They don’t know that that algorithm is the real coaching that coaches have to teach and perfect in reallife and not the selections of formations.

That’s why I asked the joker who claimed his selection will defeat rohr’s selection if he was referring to SEGA or NINTENDO

      • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

        …I am a trainer…consistency…in terms of what has been learnt….selections or formations….

    • Adeniyi 5 years ago

Opinion noted. But i want to ask a question, on what basis is Onuachu in the team? goal scoring form for club? his recent performance for club and country? His aerial prowess, skills? Speed? shot accuracy? defense? Just tell me. I am not saying ROHR is biased as every coach has players that they think fit into their plans, but how has onuachu impacted any game he has played aside his first match against Egypt?

As for Akpeyi, if you have been watching him play for the SE lately, you will see that he is an error-prone GK. Aside his error against Argentina, the first Match against Algeria in 2018 WC qualifiers, baba made several errors that could have given the opposition goals, even the Algerian goal, he was caught out of position (any GK an be guilty of this though). In the very first match of AFCON19 qualifier in Uyo against SA, you didnt see his errors? (Even the second goal), In this last AFCON, shey you saw how he made Mahrez a superstar, aside that, he made several errors in the matches he played, we were most time fortunate that the oppositions couldnt make them count.

He must have been doing well for his club, i guess his reputation in the national team is not helping his course at all, he becomes jittery, non-confident, not composed and overtly not reliable when manning the sticks for the SE.

My issue with Rohr is that he is killing our league, i cant imagine how he continually ignore players from the NPFL and the fact that the NFF and other football administrators in the country ignore this, amuses me a whole lot. Dont say our players are most times inactive, Rohr has been around for some time now, even when our league was on. If really he is a national team coach, he would have done a great job discovering talents from the local league. There many players better than what we have in the SE right now, given the right atmosphere. Go around the country and see for yourself.

      • Mr Hush 5 years ago

        @Adeniyi
Though I agree with you on the view that Onuachu and Akepyi hasn’t really impressed in the Super Eagles jersey but saying Rohr is our killing our league is far fetched. Paradoxically, you can’t kill what is already dead.
I know you would agree with me that we don’t have a functioning league and we haven’t had one for a while even before the coming of Rohr. All we have had is a stop gap machine training players who are seeking the next available mode out of the country to a functioning league.

Yes. Some would site the example of Keshi using some home based players win the Afcon; that is true , but Keshi did that inspite of our non functioning league rather than because of it. Besides , right now is worst than when Keshi was in charge; cause then the league was atleast on, so you can monitor players, but right now it is not even on, last one before this, it was an short version of which most of the players and clubsides hated.
You should understand that in the last decade or so, the best legs and good coaches have all left or are leaving the Nigerian league for even African countries like Zambia, Sudan, etc. And the deplorable state of our local based players and coaches could be seen in our loss to Togo. In fact, without the influx of the foreign based, the U23 wouldn’t have qualified for the qualification stage in Egypt later this year. And all these are fact.
Simply put, there is really nothing to build on from the Nigerian leage right now as it relates to the Super Eagles.
Yes there is lot of potential in Nigeria, but potential is raw; the Super Eagles needs ready made, not raw.Our best legs are all abroad. It is sad but it is true.
The NFF or league management board or whatever they call themselves, should fix the league get it functioning. Then we can criticise Rohr for not inviting from there. Because right now, I can’t even name one player from any Nigerian clubsides I can invite to the present Super Eagle, the Standard is so high. Even if I would replace Onuachu and Akpeyi right now, it wouldn’t be with anyone from the Nigerian league.
Let’s give Rohr a break on this. We should channel our criticism to the right source.

        • Dr. Drey 5 years ago

2017/2018, our league ended prematurely at week 24.
2018/2019, we had an abridged league.
2019/2020, the league hasnt commenced and we are entering November in a few hours.
That is the league Rohr is killing….LMAO

        • Adisboy 5 years ago

God bless you Mr.Hush. That someone can blame Rohr for the league is incredulous. We struggle to face reality. Let Adeniyi name one country, just one, where it is the responsibility of the national team coach to improve the national league. If so what is the job of the national association? I tire oo.

A league that hasn’t worked for almost three years yet you are saying there are players in this lame league that would bench these current super Eagles’s players. Kindly name the players that would put to bench any of these players in the Super Eagles setup.

God bless you @Hush those few lines above have in a nut shell described the entirety of our NPFL. I just wonder how some people reason, mention any player in the NPFL that can bench any of our foreign players in the SE, the answer is none, team that could not qualify for CHAN, a team that was humiliated by lesser African teams, why will any one even posit that Rohr is killing our local leagues? is he NFF? A league where a highest goal scorer emerges, the next season you will hear he has join one club abroad some even run to other African countries. that cannot happen in a functioning league. fact is our league is dead, and no body should mention Rohr name in regards to that. He is even magnanimous for even calling a match rusty Ezenwa, going by the standard of Rohr Ezenwa does not deserve a call up. But he is the coach, lets allow him to do his job.

Why does Rohr keep inviting Onuachu? A guy wey go fall if small breeze blow. Why is Rohr being so patient with him? Take a good look at Onuachu, and you will see why! If Onuachu can just get fitter and stronger physically, and try to put his imposing height to better use, add a little confidence to the mix, and the guy would become UNPLAYABLE!

I’m not surprised to see Akpeyi in this squard. As long as we are still having Amaju, Coach Rohr and Aloy Agu in charge of our football, Super Eagles are meaningless.

Osegwe is waiting likewise Okoye but why? Why such a thing is happening in this Country? Heartless people. So sad. Our football is dying indeed. What a shame. God bless Nigeria!!!

Fantastic group of players! Imagine a 3-4-3 formation, where we parade; Ezenwa in goal,
    Awaziem, Kenneth and Troost Ekong as back 3;
Agu Mikel,Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Aribo Ayodele
Samuel chukwueze, Victor Osimen , Samuel Kalu

Akpeyi and Tall for nothing Onuachu as posited are the only drawbacks in the team other than those two the team is impeccable and should beat Benin and Lesotho with ease. Those clamoring for inclusion of dead legs that fell woefully to the hawks of Togo back to back are myopic in thinking. Nigeria don’t have what it takes to raise a continent conquering team from the local league like the Egyptians, Zambians and even Nigeria did in the past. Our league is dead and walloping in oblivion. Soar SE come and get thrashed @ Benin & Lesotho.
