Rooney: I Never Wanted Chelsea To Win The Premier League In 2006

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has admitted he never wanted Chelsea to win the Premier League title in 2006 and devised a way to stop them.

The former England international said he had to wear dangerous (but legal) longer studs for the Red Devils Premier League title clash with Chelsea so that he could ‘hurt’ an opposition player.

Manchester United would have stopped the Blues from lifting the trophy had they won the match which would have also kept their title hopes alive as they were nine points behind the Blues with three games to go.

The Red Devils chances of leapfrogging Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side were slim and Rooney conceded that he ‘couldn’t take’ the idea of watching his rivals clinch the title at Stamford Bridge.

So the former England international opted to change his normal studs for longer ones in order to inflict more damage on Chelsea stars.

“I changed my studs before the game,” Rooney revealed in the upcoming documentary ‘Rooney’, which will be released on Amazon Prime on Friday.

“I put longer studs in because I wanted to hurt someone.

“If Chelsea won a point, they won the league.

“At that time, I couldn’t take it.

“The studs were legal, they were a legal size, but they were bigger than what I would normally wear.”

Chelsea went ahead to beat Rooney and his teammates 3-0 to win the league, with Rooney getting injured in the game.

The former Manchester United striker is now the manager of championship side, Derby County.
