International Chess Federation (FIDE) operations manager Sergey Indeykin has died at age 36 after reportedly developing a severe form of malaria following a work trip to Nigeria.
Indeykin traveled to Abuja, Nigeria, in early August to help organize the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.

After leaving Nigeria for Uzbekistan, he began to feel unwell. His condition worsened rapidly after he returned to Russia, where he was hospitalized in Perm.
Family statements and local media reports indicate he contracted a fast-progressing, severe form of malaria from a mosquito bite during his stay in Abuja.
“It was a very rapidly progressing illness. The most severe form,” her mother said, according to RBC.
The International Chess Federation acknowledged his passing as the result of a sudden illness, honoring his contributions to major worldwide chess events since 2021.

The late FIDE manager said to have made significant contributions to major international chess events, also supported an orphanage and brought chess-related souvenirs to the children from his travels.
Prior to his employment at FIDE, he worked in basketball and sports marketing, including at UNICS Kazan.
