Schindler Hails Departed Boss

Huddersfield Town defender Christopher Schindler says David Wagner assisted him in achieving a “childhood dream” in his spell with the club.

Schindler was a then-club record purchase by Wagner for his first full season in the summer of 2016, after joining from 1860 Munich for a fee believed to be around £1.7million.

Huddersfield defied the odds in his first season to earn promotion to the Premier League after a penalty shootout win over Reading, in which the centre-back scored the winning spot kick.

The Terriers survived their first season in the top flight but have struggled this term and last week, Wagner’s three-year association with the club came to an end after a mutual agreement with chairman Dean Hoyle, with the club bottom of the Premier League.

Borussia Dortmund youth coach Jan Siewert has been announced as his replacement but 28-year-old Schindler has taken time to pay tribute to Wagner for helping him play in the Premier League.

He told HTTV: “When he called me that day two-and-a-half-years ago, I didn’t really know a lot about the club, about his project or about his way of football.

“Not just for me, but for the whole club and the area, it had a massive impact. “At that stage I never thought that I was going to play in the Premier League and he made a childhood dream come true. “He helped me with that and this was an unbelievable time.”
