Schmeichel: Leicester City Squad Always Aware Of Iheanacho’s Ability

Kasper Schmeichel sayd the world is now seeing what the Leicester City squad have known for years about Kelechi Iheanacho’s qualities.

Iheanacho scored his 10th goal in seven games to send Leicester into the FA Cup final for the first time in 52 years.

His goal against Southampton in the semi-finals took his tally to 15 in all competitions, one more than strike partner Jamie Vardy.

That Iheanacho would top City’s scoring charts would have been hard to believe for many fans, as it seemed for the first couple of years of his King Power Stadium spell that he would not live up to his £25m price-tag.

However, there was no surprise in the City squad.

“We all saw what he could do in training, he just needed that luck, that decision, or that goal,” Schmiechel was quoted on Leicester Mercury.

“We knew he had the ability, we’ve seen it every day since he joined the club. We know the quality he possesses and now the world is seeing it.”

And ahead of the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley next month, Schmeichel said:”It means everything, when you think of everything we’ve been through in the past few years, everything we’ve had to deal with,” he said.

“We deserve to be there. We are enjoying this moment, something like this comes around so rarely so you have to enjoy it.

“Leicester meant the world to (late chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha), we’re so happy to repay his family with these kinds of things. They will be so proud.

“It’s difficult with the pandemic but hopefully the family will be able to come to the final.”

He added: “Any kind of win gives you confidence, so getting to the FA Cup final definitely will.”
