Senegal Hold Brazil As Neymar Makes History

Copa America champions Brazil and AFCON 2019 runners-up Senegal shared the spoils in a game that saw Neymar make history for the Selecao.

Both Brazil and Senegal selected strong starting XIs, with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye and Sadio Mane featuring for the latter, while Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar all ran out for the Selecao.

Neymar made the headlines as the 27-year-old made his 100th appearance for his country in this fixture, becoming the youngest player to reach this milestone.

Brazil opened the scoring inside 10 minutes after Gabriel Jesus set up Roberto Firmino, who chipped the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper from close range.

Senegal came close to scoring in the 25th minutes, but Ederson saved Mane’s shot from outside the box.Five minutes before the break, the Lions of Teranga had a shout for a penalty following a handball inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

However, Senegal were awarded a spot-kick on the stroke of half-time after Marquinhos brought down Mane inside the box, with Famara Diedhiou converting for the equaliser.

Brazil themselves thought they had a penalty when keeper Gomis brought down Jesus inside the box, but the match official did not agree.

Neymar came close to scoring after 70 minutes, but his free-kick sailed on to the top of the net. Richarlison could have won the game for Brazil, but his shot from the edge of the box missed the target by inches.

  • This result should put some pressure at the same time confidence in the Eagles, that Brazil can be beaten.

Super eagles, no team is unbeatable.
    Go for it!

The game could have been won by either team. Very solid defensively, Senegal is. And with a play like Sadio Mane in the attack, you know they can score goals.
Nigeria will have to dig deep to produce a similar result or better. It’s not going to be easy. Yet, I believe that if our key players perform well, we have a good chance!

I agree with your assessment. In the early minutes the Teranga Lions showed too much respect for the Brazilians and were error prone. In the second half the difference between the two sides became obvious. The Brazilians were quick on the ball, their passing quicker, more accurate and purposeful. The usual African problem of individual players holding on to the ball for too long thus being easily dispossessed. I hope the Super Eagles do not repeat the same mistakes.

  • Senegal With an indigenous coach played Brazil without fear or repect.
Did not play ten defenders and a goal keeper.
    It was a game of 11 v 11.

PLS MR. RHOR DONT GO AND PLAY YOUR. FEAR INDUCED DEFENSIVE GAME.

PLS. FOR GOD’S SAKE, PLAY AN ATTACKING FOOTBALL FOR US.
    THANK YOU.

    • @ CJ what will you call our match against Ukraine, defensive or attacking?

It is going to be a great game on Sunday.
The Super Eagles should be wary, Brazil would come out with full force.
They have been pegged back by two unwarranted results in their last two internationalas. A 1-0 loss to Peru;. And now this draw with Senegal; an African team the people of Brazil feels inferior to their own selecao. So it is two matches against supposedly weaker oppositions and no win. Adding to the fact, they had to come back to draw with Colombia in a fixture before these two matches, shows Brazil has gone 3 games without a win.
Bearing all these in mind, Tite charges would come all out against the Super Eagles. They already think we are beatable and by the forebearing, they would want it even more now.
It is not a call for worry. It is a call to be alert. Yes, it is a friendly; but pride is always at stake. I sincerely hope we stick to our game plan and get one further.
From what i observed in the game; Senegal started with a lot of respect for Brazil;and such led to the Brazilian goal.but the maturity and quality of the more experienced Senegalese players like Mane,Coulibaly,Kouyate, Gueye,( not forgetting the kid from Brugges; Diatta); lifted the Senegalese team and they came back strongly; helped by the fact that the Brazilians were playing “big man” football ( especially Neymar; holding on to the ball needlessly).
The tactical prowess of the Senegalese coach, Diarra, must be emphasised. He managed the game well and his substitutions were top notch.
As it were.the game turned out balanced.

I expect on fiery game on Sunday. I know we would play our much enterprsing game and we would be pushed to the ropes; i just hope we hold our own like Senegal did; maybe better.
Anyway.can’t wait for Sunday.hope football dont get to surprise me in the negative.

    • Ist half Senegalese felling jittery. Passes are not accurate. Low esteem. As if the game will end with basketfull of goals against Senegal. And Brazil taping easily. But Brazilian where affected by the heat . Water call breaks observed. Senegal rose their game and where equal to the task. God saved Brazil from losing today

Watched a Brazil coming back with their beautiful samba football today. Quick thinking n passes. Just the typical Brazilian football we used to see back in d days. They gonna choke up that midfield just to suffocate Iwobi n try to cut off our wingers. But thank God we’ve got players like d wazza dazzler Chuzee, Denise Bonaventure, etc that are good dribblers. Sad to miss Kalu in this kinda game. I don’t think passing the ball too much around the midfield Will favour us oo with what I saw today lol. I think direct runners that can take on players like Chukweze is what we need.

    • Which medium did you watch the match pls?

    • Mr Hush 5 years ago

      @Glory

      You are on point..

I do know the game would be very open; since we both hve fast dribbling players and good at the one touch football. Iwobi,Chuzee,Dennis and Aribo as well( he is very skillful)..Kalu would definitely be missed.but I believe the rest can hold their own. It just depends on how Rohr’s sets up.

Yes oo my brother @ Hush. Brazil is trying to perfect that their old style of play with these friendlies, as they look unto the next world cup. They play at varying tempo, from high, they come to walking pace n quickly go back to high again just to confuse opponents. They make quick decisions n quick passes. Winning in these friendlies from their body language seem to be secondary while perfecting their strategy seem to primary. But the opposite was the case with the Senegalese. Won’t blame them though,as it’s always a big achievement to beat Brazil. While for Brazil beating Senegal wouldn’t make a big headline.
