Everton boss Marco Silva has told Leighton Baines he still has a big part to play in the first team squad. The 34-year-old has lost his left-back spot to Lucas Digne this term and has only featured when the Frenchman has been absent. With his contract running out in the summer, and no talks scheduled for a new one, there was a fear that Baines’ time at Goodison Park could be coming to an end.

Silva though says there is still a future for him at the club, he told the Star: “Why not? Football is not just the 11 players who are playing at one time. “It is not just the 11 players coming more in the picture on the match day. A big club and strong squad is more than that. “I have no doubts Leighton is a big part of our squad , he is a really important part of our squad. “If he plays 10, 15, 20 games or if he plays five or 10, he is a really important player for me, for our club, an important player for our dressing room also. “If he is in the last year of the contract of course it is a possibility for him to renew his contract also.”
