Singh backs Pant for World Cup impact

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed Rishabh Pant to have a major impact for India at this summer’s World Cup.

The 21-year-old wicket-keeper batsman is only at the beginning of his international career, but he produced a match-winning knock of 40 off just 28 deliveries to help India to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second match of their Twenty20 series on Friday.

Pant’s performance certainly caught the eye of former India star Singh, who believes the youngster can make a big impact at this summer’s World Cup in England if he can maintain that kind of form.

“Every opportunity will take (Rishabh) Pant closer to the World Cup squad, especially if he continues to keep scoring like this,” Singh was quoted as saying by Aaj Tak. “I feel he has that x-factor which India will need in the (2019) World Cup. Pant is someone who can change games.”

The Delhi star will get his next chance to impress in an India shirt during the third and final match of their T20 series with New Zealand in Hamilton on Sunday.

The two teams are level at 1-1 heading into that game, with India having already wrapped up the One Day International series 4-1 earlier this month.
