Smith Eyes World Title Fight After Dismantling Eggington

eLiam Smith has set his sights on another world title shot following his fifth-round stoppage of Sam Eggington in Liverpool on Saturday.

It was clear from the first bell that former WBO light-middleweight champion Smith was a class above his opponent, with his jab particularly causing problems for Eggington, who did not appear to have the size or power to compete.

Indeed, Eggington was only saved by the bell during the second round, but that was merely delaying the inevitable, as the referee called the fight just three rounds later, handing Smith a return to winning ways following his defeat to Jaime Munguia in their WBO light-middleweight title bout last July.

That defeat is one of only two Smith has suffered during the career – the other coming against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2016 – and he feels he is now just a couple of fights away from another world title shot. “Give me two fights then I’ll fight anyone,” Smith said after beating Eggington.

The Liverpudlian’s trainer, Joe Gallagher, also feels a title shot could be on the horizon and he has mooted that a potential eliminator against Sergio Garcia could be the 30-year-old’s next port of call, while promoter Eddie Hearn is open to the possibility of an all-British showdown with Kell Brook. Gallagher said: “We’ve seen Sergio Garcia beat Ted Cheeseman – [Garcia] is No 2 with the WBC. If that was a final eliminator that would give Liam a mandatory shot at the world title.”
